Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the thin-film magnetic head having good sliding performance by disposing sliding members in such a manner that the magnetic gap position of the head is nearly the axis of symmetry. CONSTITUTION:The sliding members 1,2, magnetic core 3 and magnetic gap 4 of the thin-film magnetic head are provided and further, the outside shape curve of the sliding surface of the magnetic head is continuous with respect to the magnetic recording medium traveling direction 8 of this magnetic head. In addition, the head has the sliding member 5 disposed with the magnetic gap 4 so as to be nearly the axis of symmetry. The thin-film magnetic head chip 6 and the sliding member 5 constitute the continuous outside shape curve and the magnetic recording medium 11 slides thereon. The magnetic head having the magnetic gap 4 in the position asymmetrical with the traveling direction of the magnetic recording medium is disposed with such sliding member 5, the outside shape curve of which in the traveling direction of the sliding surface thereof is continuous, in such a manner that the position of the magnetic gap 4 is nearly the axis of symmetry with respect to the traveling direction of the magnetic recording medium 11. The magnetic head which obviates the deterioration in the sliding performance by the adhesive layer for adhering a protective plate and the deterioration in the performance of the magnetic core 3 by the temp. at the time of adhesion is obtd.

[Prior Art] As described in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 61-24007, a conventional thin film magnetic head is manufactured by forming a protective insulating thin film on the head element portion of the thin film magnetic head, and further forming the protective insulating layer into a planar shape. A continuous sliding surface was created by processing the protective plate into resin or glass and bonding it to resin or glass.

In addition, in conventional multi-element magnetic heads, an auxiliary chip for preventing magnetic tape from sagging is installed near the middle of adjacent head chips, as described in Published Utility Model Publication No. 61-114510, to prevent discontinuous sliding. Products have been proposed that have good sliding performance on both surfaces.

However, in the above conventional technology that creates a continuous sliding surface,
When the protective plate is bonded with resin, the protective plate moves because the resin in the adhesive layer expands or contracts due to moisture absorption, etc., and the continuous sliding surface becomes discontinuous, deteriorating the sliding performance.

Furthermore, when bonding the protective plate to glass, no consideration has been given to deterioration of the characteristics of the magnetic head element due to the bonding temperature or peeling off of the protection due to insufficient bonding strength when low melting point glass is used.

The above object is a thin film magnetic head in which the magnetic gap is located at an asymmetric position with respect to the running direction of the magnetic recording medium, and in order to have a single gap configuration, the external curve in the running direction with the sliding surface of the magnetic head is continuous. This is achieved by arranging a sliding member such that the magnetic gap position is approximately on the axis of symmetry with respect to the running direction of the magnetic recording medium.

It is longer than the width on the opposite side of the gap. By adopting the above configuration, the initial contact area between the magnetic recording medium and the moving member 5 increases from 0 to a constant value, so that stable sliding performance can be obtained. In this embodiment, only the shape of the end of the sliding member 5 on the opposite side to the gap is shown, but the shape of the end of the thin film magnetic helad tip 6 on the side opposite to the gap can also be processed as described above. It is clear that similar effects can be obtained.
