Abstract

PURPOSE:To control the luminance of lighted LEDs by driving display digits by the AND signal of a PWM signal and display digit signal from a CPU synchronized with the rise and fall of the lowermost signal LSB of the display digit signal. CONSTITUTION:The PWM signal is applied to the terminal, the inverse of EG of a decoder 6 when the CPU 5 receives the rise and fall of the LSB as a trigger. The decoder 6 drives the respective display digits by the AND signal of the PWM signal and the decoding signal of the display digit signal and turn on switches SW1-m of the desired digits only for the period (t). A display controller 3 outputs the lighted LED segment signal synchronized with the display digit signal to common cathode side switches SW'11-1n and the lighting time of the LEDs is determined by the output of the decoder 6. Namely, the segment LEDs of the prescribed digits are eventually lighted only for the time when the decoder 6 is enabled with the time divided by the controller 3 as the max. lighting time. The luminance control of the lighted LEDs by the CPU is, therefore, possible and the loss of electric power is decreased.

(Problems to be Solved by the Invention) In the method of varying the current flowing through the LED segments described above, it is necessary to adjust the value of the current limiting resistor, and the adjustment is troublesome. Furthermore, the method of varying the power supply voltage requires trimming the variable resistor for varying the output of the power supply while checking the lighting state of the LED, which is also troublesome to adjust.

A control signal is sent from the CPU 5 to the display controller 3 via the data bus 2, and the display controller 3 outputs a display digit signal as shown in FIG. 2(b). This display digit signal changes sequentially from the first digit to the second digit, third digit, and so on at a period T. During this period, the entire display digit signal takes a constant value for each digit during the period T. Due to its nature, the least significant signal (LSB) among these display digit signals always rises or falls at the beginning of the period T, as shown in FIG. 2(a).

When the CPU 5 receives the rising or falling edge of LSH as a trigger, it outputs a PWM signal as shown in FIG.
give to This decoder 6 is output enabled when the PWM signal is at the "0" level, and disabled when the PWM signal is at the "1" level. Therefore, the decoder 6 outputs the AND signal (period t) of the decoded signal of the display digit signal and the PWM signal. Figure (d)
Each display digit is driven using a decoder display digit signal as shown in FIG. 2, and the switch (any one of SW1 to SWm) of the desired digit is turned on. As a result, the common anode of the target digit is connected to the voltage @Vcc. The period during which the switch is on is t.

On the other hand, the display controller 3 outputs a lighting LED segment signal synchronized with the display digit signal to the common cathode side switch of each digit, and each switch (in the case of the first digit, SW, j- to SW, -) Turn on only during period T. Therefore, the lighting time of the LED is ultimately determined by the output of the decoder 6, and becomes t. In other words, the time divided by the display controller 3 is set as the maximum LED lighting time, and the segment LED of a predetermined digit is lit for the time period when the decoder 6 is enabled.

The period t during which the PWM signal output from the CPU 5 is at the "0m level" can be varied by a program, so by changing this period t, the brightness of the LED, that is, the luminance can be adjusted. According to the present invention, since there is no need to adjust the circuit, brightness adjustment can be simplified.Furthermore, since the LED is not turned on unnecessarily, power loss can be reduced.
