Welding rods used for manual welding have a coating applied around the core wire to prevent oxidation of the welded area.
The core wire must be exposed at the rear end, which is held in a holder for energization, and the core wire at the tip must be exposed on the surface to enable arc generation at the start of welding. . However, the coating coating machine that manufactures such coated welding rods coats the entire welding rod core wire, including both ends, with a coating coating, so the tip and rear ends of the coated welding rod that exit the coating machine are coated with coating coating. It needs to be scraped off.

FIG. 2 shows the tip of a coated welding rod R whose tip has been polished, and in the figure, 1 is the coating material and 2 is the core wire. The coating material 1 is ground at approximately 45 degrees at the tip so that when the welding rod is brought into contact with the base material, the core wire contacts the base material and conduction of electricity becomes possible. This tip polishing is performed by a polishing roller, and FIG. 3 shows the structure of a conventional polishing roller. This roller 3 is an integral body made of carbon steel, and a toothed portion 3a extending in the width W direction is provided on its surface. The outer peripheral surface of the roller is slightly tapered (indicated by d), and when the welding rod R, which contacts the rotating roller at right angles as shown in the figure, rotates and moves in the direction of the arrow, the roller A predetermined amount of polishing is performed by moving from a portion with a small outer diameter to a portion with a large outer diameter.

When a polishing roller having such a structure is rotated at high speed to cut the tip of the coating material of the welding rod, the surface of the roller, that is, the toothed portion 3a comes into contact with the core wire of the tip, and the toothed portion is likely to wear. Conventional rollers are made of carbon steel (JISS45C), which is cast and has teeth formed on its surface, and then hardened by quenching.
At this time, the surface becomes oxidized, becomes rough, and becomes easily chipped, causing clogging during use. As a result of these factors, the polishing ability deteriorates relatively rapidly, and the rollers have to be replaced in a short period of time (short life). In addition, it has been put into practical use to use an inset type cemented carbide instead of the above-mentioned carbon steel, but this is difficult to sinter and finish, and is also expensive.

This polishing roller 4 has a bearing part 5 that fits on a drive shaft (not shown), a cylindrical part 6 having a protruding part 8 on one side edge, and a flange part 7 connecting these bearing part 5 and the cylindrical part 6. A main body portion 9 and a number of annular plates 1 overlapping each other with annular spacers 13 interposed therebetween.
The polishing member 11 consists of a polishing member 11 made up of two parts, and a fixing fitting 10 that is screwed onto the other side edge of the cylindrical part 6 with a threaded part 14. The annular plate 12 and spacer 13 of the polishing member 11 are made of, for example, a thin steel plate with a thickness of about 1 to 2 mm (the annular plate 12 is made of plate spring steel, etc.), and when stacked alternately, the total length is about 150 mm. The polishing member 11 is as follows.

The main body portion 9 and the fixture 10 are made of cast steel, which is an ordinary structural material, and are formed by casting and cutting into the shape shown. The polishing member 11 is fitted onto the outer peripheral surface of the cylindrical portion 6 of the main body portion 9, and the thread 14 of the fixture 10 is screwed into the thread on the other side edge of the cylindrical portion 6. is clamped and fixed between the protrusion 8 and the fixture 10.

In the polishing roller of the present invention, the outer periphery of the thin annular plate serves as the teeth for polishing the tip of the covered welding rod, so even if it wears out, the shape of the teeth does not change, and it can be used for a long time. Also, if you remove the fixing metal fittings, you can remove the polishing member.
In other words, it is very convenient because the annular plate and spacer can be easily replaced.
