の直線偏光に分離する偏光ビームスプリツタと、 この偏光ビームスプリツタで分離された2つの
直線偏光のうちの一方の直線偏光の偏光方向をπ
/2ラジアン回転させる旋光素子と、 前記偏光ビームスプリツタで分離された2つの
直線偏光のうちの他方の直線偏光と前記旋光素子
で偏光方向をπ/2ラジアン回転された前記一方
の直線偏光とを1つの光束に合成して前記液晶表
示パネルに入射させる光合成部とを備え、 かつ前記液晶表示パネルの入射側偏光板の透過
軸を、前記光合成部で合成された直線偏光の振動
方向と平行にするとともに、 前記光合成部は、一面に多数の三角柱状プリズ
ムを互いに連続させて平行に形成した光合成用プ
リズム板と、前記一方の直線偏光と他方の直線偏
光とを前記光合成用プリズム板に入射させる光路
