Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the adhesiveness and film-forming properties by dispersing a partially neutralized ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer in an aq. dispersion of a partially neutralized ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer. CONSTITUTION:80-20wt.% partially neutralized ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer having an acrylic acid content of 5-45wt.% and an MFR of 1-4500g/10min is dispersed in an aq. dispersion of 20-80wt.% partially neutralized ethylene- methacrylic acid copolymer having a methacrylic acid content of 5-45wt.% and MFR (190 deg.C, ASTM D1238) of 0.1-30g/10min, to give a copolymer compsn. contg. 5-50wt.% the sum of the two copolymers and having a viscosity of 30-250cP. The resulting compsn. is applied to a substrate, heated and baked at 80-250 deg.C for 20sec to 10min, giving a coating film with a thickness of 10mum or higher.

However, with the aqueous dispersion of ionomer derived from ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer, the coating film obtained after application to the substrate and baking process is slightly sticky, and the amount of coating may be reduced due to unrolling and overlapping. It is not always sufficient in terms of product storage such as matching.

A preferred production method is to disperse an ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymer or a partially neutralized product thereof in an aqueous medium to form a dispersion of a partially neutralized ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymer, and add ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer to the dispersion. A method of dispersing as a partially neutralized product of ethylene/acrylic acid by adding a combination or a partially neutralized product thereof is preferred.A copolymer dispersion dispersed by such a method has particularly good thick coating properties, and can be coated easily. In some cases, a continuous film is formed that is difficult to crack.
