Abstract

PURPOSE:To attain exact measurement and improvement in workability by measuring the characteristics of a magnetic head after the correct contact position of the magnetic head and a tape is monitored and set with a monitor television by utilizing the specular surface of the tape surface. CONSTITUTION:The contact position region of the magnetic head 20 and the tape T is photographed and displayed on the monitor television 13 by a high- resolution television lens 11. While the head 20 is not positioned and set in the exact position with the tape T, the specular image of the head 20 projected on the tape T is in an inclined state and the distance on the videos at both ends of the head 20 varies. The position of the head 20 is, thereupon, adjusted to minimize the distance between the gap part of the head 20 and the gap part of the specular image by rotating a table 9 while monitoring the television 13. The characteristics of the head are measured by using a recording and reproducing circuit 10 upon completion of the position setting, by which the exact measurement and the improvement in the workability are attained.

Currently, the position of the magnetic head with respect to the tape during measurement is determined by the measurer who visually places the magnetic head 20 on the tape.
Fine adjustments were made by moving the magnet closer to or farther away from it, and the optimal position was determined while measuring the magnetic properties.

The magnetic head is very small, about 2 mm x 2 mm (and it is not easy to position the magnetic head 20 correctly with respect to the tape T by visual inspection (it requires considerable skill). Making adjustments has the problem of increasing the number of measurements and requiring a large amount of time before starting actual measurements.

Further, the tip of the magnetic head 20 is generally R-polished, and even if the position of the magnetic head 20 with respect to the tape T is set by the above method, if the magnetic head 20 is not aligned with the tape T as shown in FIG. If the magnetic head 20 is arranged at an angle with respect to the tape T, it cannot be said that the tip gap portion G of the magnetic head 20 is accurately positioned with respect to the tape T, and correct electromagnetic conversion characteristics cannot be measured.

Furthermore, a mirror image 20' of the magnetic head 20 reflected on the tape T, which has a mirror surface, is also displayed on the monitor television 13. The mirror image 20' is formed at a position symmetrical to the magnetic head 20 with the mirror surface position of the tape T as the center. Therefore, in the state where the magnetic head 20 is inclined with respect to the tape T, the distance G on the image at both ends of the magnetic head 20,

As described in detail above, the present invention makes use of the fact that the surface of the tape T is a mirror surface to set the correct contact position between the magnetic head and the tape while monitoring it on a television monitor. It has the advantage that the position of the gap portion of the magnetic head relative to the tape can be adjusted quickly and accurately. Therefore, according to the present invention, the electromagnetic conversion characteristics of a magnetic head can be accurately measured, and the time and labor required for measurement can be significantly reduced, and workability can be improved.
