There is active development of so-called active matrix liquid crystal panels that remove these limitations. In addition to thin film transistors, switching elements include thin film diodes and metal-insulating film-metal configurations.
A large number of MIM devices and other devices are being studied. The development status of these active matrix methods is detailed in, for example, Nikkei Electronics No. 333 (published by Nikkei McGraw-Hill).

Due to the enormous size, extremely fine dimensions, and complicated manufacturing process, it is extremely difficult to produce a large-scale replica array of defect-free switching elements, resulting in low manufacturing yields and high manufacturing costs. ing. Therefore, currently the prototype has a pixel count of 325 x 325 and an area of 130 x 130 mm2 .
It has been reported that the LCD panel of
Even compared to a cathode ray tube (CRT), which has a resolution of 1000 lines and can easily display the size of an A4 sheet of paper, it is still inferior in terms of large area and large display capacity.

FIG. 1 is a schematic plan view of a conventional conventional liquid crystal panel, and the areas where electrodes 11 and 12 arranged in a matrix intersect (the shaded area in the figure) constitute pixels. In this figure, an example of 5×5 pixels is shown. All of the liquid crystal panels are sealed around the periphery with an adhesive, and in FIG. 1, reference numeral 13 indicates the adhesive layer. FIG. 2 is a schematic plan view of a conventional large-area liquid crystal panel constructed by arranging the four liquid crystal panels shown in FIG. 1 in a mosaic pattern. In the liquid crystal panel shown in FIG. 2, the pixel spacing is widened by the liquid crystal panel fixing frame 21 and the adhesive layer 13, and even if large-area display is performed, a grid-like area that cannot be used for display becomes conspicuous, and the image quality deteriorates significantly. There is a drawback.

When a voltage is selectively applied between 3, 44, and 45 and the image is observed while being sandwiched between two polarizing plates, an image can be displayed by normal twisted nematic (TN) operation. In this liquid crystal panel, the substrate 32,
The joints 33, 34, and 35 are completely unnoticeable, and the spacing between the display electrodes at those parts is exactly the same as the electrode spacing on the individual substrates. There were no problems such as deterioration of image quality due to the presence of areas, and a uniform display of extremely good image quality was obtained over a large area. Note that no deterioration in the robustness of the liquid crystal panel was observed due to the bonding of multiple substrates. This is because each of the plurality of substrates is firmly adhered to one support substrate facing each other via a spacer.

However, in the present invention, the resin sheet is not limited to a single layer structure, but may have a multilayer structure. For example, in a liquid crystal panel with a structure in which the resin sheet 36 is replaced with an adhesive polarizing plate (multilayer resin sheet), in addition to the features of the above-mentioned embodiment, such as a large area and uniformly good image quality, a liquid crystal panel with a structure that is simple and
Even better effects can be achieved with a thinner profile and lower price. Furthermore, in a liquid crystal having a structure in which the resin sheet 36 was replaced with an adhesive patterned color filter film, a color display was obtained over a large area and with uniform and good image quality as described above. Next, another embodiment of the present invention, which is particularly effective in increasing display capacity and lowering the cost of liquid crystal panels, will be described.

3, 54, and 55, the number of pixels per sheet was 3.times.4, but in reality, substrates having 220.times.330 switching elements per sheet were obtained with a good yield. The area is 90x70cm2 . however,
Attempting to increase the capacity further will result in extremely low manufacturing yields, and in order to manufacture larger-area substrates, extremely large and expensive equipment will be required for film formation, exposure, etc. for forming thin film transistors. As a result, manufacturing costs rose significantly. In other words, with conventional technology, even active matrix type liquid crystal panels capable of increasing capacity can only display 220 x 330 pixels at an appropriate price.
The practical limit was about 90 x 70 cm 2 in pixels. However, according to this embodiment, by connecting four substrates having switching elements to form a single support substrate, the manufacturing yield and manufacturing equipment are the same, and 440×
A liquid crystal panel of approximately 180 x 140 cm 2 with 660 pixels was easily obtained. Therefore, this embodiment has a large capacity, a large area, and is inexpensive. In terms of image quality, there was a problem with the integration of liquid crystal panels using conventional technology in that the grid-like joints were noticeable and the image quality deteriorated significantly, but with the liquid crystal panel of this embodiment, the joints were not noticeable and an extremely uniform and high-quality image could be obtained. It was done. It should be noted that the liquid crystal panel of this example was also found to have sufficient robustness, which is the same as the example shown in FIG. 3 described above. Further, even in a liquid crystal panel having a switching element as in this embodiment, even more effects can be obtained by using a functional sheet such as a polarizing plate or a color filter as the resin sheet. Note that in the first and second embodiments,
Although one supporting substrate is constructed with four substrates, in the present invention, one supporting substrate can also be constructed by arranging more substrates in parallel.
