When the pressure applied to the liquid storage chamber is instantaneous, the compression of the liquid is also instantaneous, and the liquid discharged from the nozzle becomes droplets.

The droplet ejected from the nozzle hits the recording paper, and a dot of ink is written on the recording paper.
In this operation, for example, if the nozzle is moved in the horizontal direction while moving the recording paper in the vertical direction, it is possible to record ink dots in a predetermined pattern such as letters on the entire surface of the recording paper.

Ink liquid 3 is supplied to the liquid storage chamber 2 configured as shown above, and dots are formed when small droplets of liquid ejected from the nozzle 1 hit the recording paper, so that recording can be performed very quietly.
As a means of applying pressure to the ink liquid, for example, an electric pulse is applied to a piezoelectric body 4 made of a piezo crystal such as PZT, and if the distortion of this piezoelectric body is used, fewer driving parts are required for recording. The device can be made small and records can be written in a short time.

Furthermore, by overlapping ink liquids of different colors at the same location on the recording paper, it is possible to record not only the color of the ink liquid itself but also multiple colors.

To change the density in multiple stages, there is a method of changing the number of dots written on a certain area of recording paper. For example, to obtain a high-density record, increase the number of dots written on the recording paper, and to make a light record, reduce the number of dots. However, there are limits to expressing halftones using this method alone. To change the density in multiple stages, it is necessary to change the number of dots per unit area of the recording paper and to control the diameter of the dots written on the recording paper.

It is desirable to be able to freely control it.

The friction of the ink liquid at the nozzle increases, making it difficult for the ink liquid to be ejected from the nozzle. There is naturally a limit to reducing the diameter of the nozzle opening due to the fluidity of the ink liquid passing through the nozzle. Although it is possible to reduce the size of the droplet to some extent by reducing the diameter of the nozzle opening, the size cannot be freely controlled.

変的にコントロールすることができない。 Another method is to use satellites, which are small droplets that are formed secondarily behind a droplet when ejected from a nozzle, in order to make a high-density record on a recording paper. The droplets and satellites ejected from the nozzle hit the recording paper at the same location without any manipulation. In order to change the size of the dots recorded on the recording paper, it is necessary to use droplets and satellites, or to record with small diameter dots, it is necessary to use only satellites. In this case, operations must be performed to prevent the droplets from reaching the recording paper. Therefore, means for charging and deflecting the droplets and a device for collecting unused droplets are required, which increases the size of the entire recording apparatus. Since satellites are formed as a secondary product when droplets are ejected from a nozzle, their size cannot be changed freely. Therefore, according to this device, although the diameter of the dots written on the recording paper varies depending on the difference between droplets and satellites, the size cannot be variably controlled.

としたのである。 Next, in order to freely change the size of the droplets and control the diameter of the dots marked on the recording paper, we changed the magnitude (high/low) of the pulse voltage applied to the electro-mechanical converter, and A device was devised to control the size of the droplets by controlling the amount of pressure applied to the ink liquid. If the pressure applied to the ink liquid is large,
It was thought that the droplets ejected from the nozzle would be larger, and if the applied pressure was lower, the droplets would be smaller. The idea was to control the size of the droplets by increasing or decreasing the pulse voltage.

い。 However, with this device, the area in which the size of the droplets can be changed is narrow, and it has been found that it is difficult to form droplets of a certain size. The liquid storage chamber, electro-mechanical converter, etc. that make up the liquid ejection device have a unique vibration frequency, and the vibration frequency generated by the pulse voltage applied to the electro-mechanical converter matches the above-mentioned unique vibration frequency. Otherwise, the applied pressure will efficiently eject a droplet of a constant size from the nozzle, but if the vibration frequency generated by the pulsed voltage applied to the electro-mechanical converter is close to the resonant frequency, Due to the tension at the resonant frequency, the expected vibrations will not occur and the droplets emitted from the nozzle will be unstable. This is considered to be the reason why the range in which the droplet size can be changed becomes narrower. Therefore, by varying the pulse voltage applied to the electro-mechanical converter,
Even if the pressure applied to the liquid is changed, the size of the droplets ejected from the nozzle cannot be arbitrarily controlled, and the dots recorded on the recording paper cannot be freely adjusted from small to large.

The piezo crystal is distorted by applying the pulse voltage, and this distortion applies pressure to the ink liquid. When pressure is applied to the ink liquid, a droplet is ejected from the nozzle, and the droplet marks a dot on the recording paper.

放出される。 Since the additional pulse voltage S has the opposite polarity to the main pulse voltage M, the direction in which the piezo crystal is distorted is opposite only when the former is applied. When the piezoelectric body is installed so that the volume of the ink liquid container is reduced by applying the main pulse voltage M, when an additional pulse voltage of the opposite polarity is applied,
The piezoelectric body is distorted in a direction that increases the volume of the ink liquid container for a time corresponding to this application. When the volume of the ink liquid container increases by applying an additional pulse voltage, the pressure inside the container decreases, and a force acts on the ink liquid in the nozzle in the direction of being sucked into the container. Then, when the additional pulse voltage S applied to the piezoelectric body stops, the piezoelectric body loses its distortion and tries to return to its original shape, which then applies pressure to the ink liquid. By applying this pressure to the ink liquid, the ink liquid within the nozzle is pushed toward the tip of the nozzle. When the additional pulse voltage S becomes zero, the piezoelectric body returns to its original shape and does not stop as it is, but stops while vibrating attenuated. This vibration of the piezoelectric body affects the pressure of the ink liquid, and the ink liquid within the nozzle repeats reciprocating motion within the nozzle. If the main pulse voltage M that forms the droplet is applied to the piezo crystal at an appropriate point during the ink liquid's reciprocating movement within the nozzle, the droplet will be at the position of the tip of the ink liquid, as shown in FIG. A correspondingly sized droplet is ejected from the nozzle.

When the transistor Tr 2 is turned on, a voltage V 2 having a polarity opposite to that of the piezo crystal 4 is applied to the piezo crystal 4 via the variable resistor VR . When voltage V 2 is applied to piezo crystal 4, piezo crystal 4 is distorted, then the additional pulse signal becomes zero, and when voltage V 2 becomes zero, it tries to return to its original shape. Due to the vibration at this time, the ink liquid within the nozzle repeats reciprocating motion within the nozzle.

is applied to the piezo crystal 4 via the variable resistor VR . Since the application time of the main pulse voltage M is longer than that of the additional pulse voltage S, the piezo crystal 4 also changes significantly and a droplet is ejected from the nozzle. The size of the droplet at this time is determined by the position of the tip of the ink liquid, which is repeatedly moved back and forth within the nozzle by the applied pulse voltage S.

できるのである。(第6図a,b参照)。 The additional pulse voltage is a voltage applied to the piezo crystal in order to cause the ink liquid to retreat or vibrate to cause the ink liquid in the nozzle to reciprocate within the nozzle.Due to the difference in the height of the additional pulse voltage and its pulse width, The behavior of the ink liquid changes, the position of the tip of the ink liquid changes, or the time required for the ink liquid to repeat one reciprocating movement within the nozzle changes. Therefore, even if the time interval between the application of the additional pulse voltage and the main pulse voltage is fixed, the position of the tip of the ink liquid in the nozzle is different, so by adjusting the height of the additional pulse voltage and its pulse width, the droplet The size of the image can be controlled. Timer 2 is a timer provided to adjust the time interval between the additional pulse voltage and the main pulse voltage (i.e., the time point at which the ink is ejected). The timer 2 outputs an output to the timer 3 provided for adjusting the pulse width of the main pulse voltage after a set time has elapsed since the input from the timer 1 was received. When the output from the timer 2 is input, the timer 3 outputs a pulse signal having a set time, that is, the width of the main pulse. This signal is input to input terminal B of the electric circuit shown in FIG. 5b, and timer 1
By connecting the output from the input terminal A to the input terminal A, the pulse width of the additional pulse voltage, the time interval between the additional pulse voltage and the main pulse voltage, and the pulse width of the main pulse voltage are adjusted. If the level of the additional pulse voltage is determined by varying V4 in FIG. 5b, a droplet of a desired size will be ejected from the nozzle.

Effects of the Invention According to the prior art, although it was possible to change the size of the droplets ejected from the nozzle to some extent, it was not possible to control the droplets to a desired size. For this reason, high-density, high-resolution recording was not possible, and even when expressing the necessary shading when recording an image, it was only possible to change the number of dots per unit area of the recording paper.

It is possible to represent intermediate tones not only by changing the dots per area, but also by changing the size of the dot diameter. Therefore, it is possible to record halftones more clearly compared to the prior art.
