In this state, during the extension stroke of the variable damping force shock absorber 5, the check valve 35 closes, so the piston upper chamber C and the piston lower chamber D are in a disconnected state.
The damping force becomes hard. Also, in the retraction stroke, the check valve 35 opens, so the piston upper chamber C opens at the opening 27.
- The first small orifice 31h with a small opening area - communicates with the piston lower chamber D through the passage 28 - passage 29 - passage 30, and the damping force becomes hard.

As explained above, in this embodiment, the spring constant can be changed to two types, soft S and hard H, and the damping force can be changed to three types, soft S, medium M, and hard H. There are six possible combinations, but in this example, the combinations actually used are as shown in FIG.
Five types of combinations are used: spring constant soft - damping force soft, spring constant soft - damping force medium, spring constant soft - damping force hard, spring constant hard - damping force medium, and spring constant hard - damping force hard. At this time, the spring constants are soft- k1 , hard- k2 (> k1 ), and the damping forces are soft- F1 , medium- F2 , hard- F3 ( F1 < F2 <
F 3 ), or the damping coefficients are soft-c 1 , medium-c 2 , hard-c 3 (c 1 <c 2 <c 3 ).

Then, if the sprung mass is m, the spring constant of the suspension device is k, and the damping coefficient is c, then the critical damping coefficient Cc = 2π・√ in the boundary state between over-damping and under-damping of the vertical vibration of the vehicle body.・The ratio between the damping coefficient c and this critical damping coefficient Cc is expressed as the damping ratio ζ=c/Cc, but ζ 1 to ζ 5 in the above combinations are as follows: ζ 1 < ζ 2 < ζ 4 Each damping coefficient c and spring constant k are selected so that <ζ 3 <ζ 5 .

Also, using the sprung natural frequency as a parameter,
RMS of sprung mass acceleration when changing damping ratio ζ
(Root Mean Square) value is measured as shown in Figure 6, and as is clear from the figure, the RMS value of sprung mass acceleration is minimum at sprung mass natural frequencies of 1.8, 1.4, 1.0, and 0.6Hz, respectively. The damping ratio that minimizes the RMS value of the sprung mass acceleration can be said to be the optimal damping ratio for the sprung mass natural frequency.

On the other hand, the size of the sub-tank 8 is inevitably determined by the layout of the vehicle, and therefore the lower limit value of the spring constant is determined, so the lower limit value of the natural frequency of the sprung mass is usually
Generally, it is about 0.8Hz, and from Fig. 7, when the natural frequency of the sprung mass is 0.8Hz, the optimum damping ratio is about 0.1. Therefore, in consideration of variations in the spring constant and damping force, the damping ratio ζ when both the spring constant and the damping force are soft is preferably set to about 0.075 to 0.125.

In the figure, first, in step, it is determined whether the vehicle is running or not (that is, stopped) based on the vehicle speed pulse signal from the vehicle speed sensor 38. If the vehicle is stopped, the process moves to step and the combination is determined. A hard spring constant and hard damping force are set to control the shaking of the vehicle body when passengers get on and off the vehicle or when loading and unloading luggage while the vehicle is stopped.

To determine whether or not the roll state is present, for example, a steering angle change rate determination level for determining the rate of change of the steering angle per unit time is set based on the vehicle speed value read in the step. The change rate per unit time is calculated from the steering angle value obtained from the detection signal of the sensor 39, and the steering angle change rate is compared with the steering angle change rate judgment level, and the steering angle change rate is determined as the steering angle change rate judgment level. To determine whether or not the vehicle is in the acceleration/deceleration state, for example, the engine speed is calculated based on the period of the fuel pulse signal from the fuel pulse sensor 40, and the transmission is adjusted based on the engine speed and the vehicle speed value obtained in the step. A gear ratio is determined, and a judgment level for the amount of acceleration and a judgment level for the amount of deceleration are set according to this gear ratio. On the other hand, a fuel pulse width change rate is calculated based on the pulse width of the fuel pulse signal, and if this fuel pulse width change rate is equal to or higher than the acceleration amount judgment level, the vehicle is in an acceleration state, and the fuel pulse width change rate is If it is equal to or higher than the deceleration amount determination level, the vehicle is in a deceleration state, and if the fuel pulse width change rate is smaller than the acceleration amount determination level and smaller than the deceleration amount determination level, it is determined that the vehicle is not in an acceleration or deceleration state.

To determine whether or not the road is good, for example, the method described in Japanese Patent Application No. 160984/1984, which is an earlier application filed by the present applicant, is used. To briefly explain this method, a vehicle height value is obtained from the detection signal of the ultrasonic vehicle height sensor 41, and three vehicle height values, for example, this time, the previous time, and the time before the previous time, are stored in a predetermined storage area of the storage device 49. Digital filter processing is performed using three vehicle height values, and high frequency components of, for example, 1.8 to 3 Hz are detected.
Extract low frequency components between 0.2 and 1.8Hz. Then, the high frequency component and low frequency component are compared with a predetermined high frequency component determination level and low frequency component determination level, respectively, and the high frequency component of the vehicle height value is equal to or higher than the high frequency component determination level and the low frequency component is the low frequency component. If it is above the judgment level, it is determined that the road surface is bad, and if the high frequency component is smaller than the high frequency component judgment level and the low frequency component is smaller than the low frequency component judgment level, it is judged that the road surface is good.

If you want to set the damping force to soft, use the method described above to set only the rear wheel side to soft.
You can do this for the ring. In this way, when the vehicle condition such as driving straight at low speed on a general good road becomes a predetermined condition for achieving the best ride comfort, both the spring constant and the damping force are set to the soft side, and in this condition. Since the damping ratio ζ 1 is set to the minimum value as described above, the best ride quality of the suspension device can be exhibited.
