BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Recent electronic devices are becoming lighter, thinner, and smaller, and this requires high-density packaging. Therefore, the electrical connectors used in these electronic devices are required to be compact and have contacts arranged as densely as possible, and the cables used are also multi-core flat cables that have a large number of conductors arranged in a dense manner. etc. are being demanded. Conventionally, in order to meet such demands, 1.27mm
In contrast to multi-core flat cables in which the core wires are arranged at a pitch, a multi-core flat cable in which the core wires are arranged at a pitch of 0.635 mm has been developed. and,
As a connector for connecting such ultra-small 0.635mm pitch multi-core flat cables,
Electrical connectors for multi-core flat cables of the insulation displacement type have been developed as disclosed in Japanese Patent Publication No. 56-37667 and Japanese Patent Publication No. 57-53629.

Problems to be Solved by the Invention In these known insulation displacement type electrical connectors, the pitch of the multi-core flat cable to be connected is
0.635mm, half the pitch of 1.27mm of the conventionally most commonly used multi-core flat cable.
The arrangement pitch of the contacts is 0.635 mm, which is half that of the conventional one, to match the cable arrangement pitch of the cable cores, so the overall size is also equal to the same number of fibers and contacts. However, the following drawbacks are becoming a problem.

In order to solve these problems, the present applicant has provided an electrical connector in which multi-core flat cables are connected by pressure contact in a plurality of layers in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 167285/1985. However, this JP-A-60-
The electrical connector for multi-core flat cables disclosed in Publication No. 167285 attempts to increase the density of the cable by using multiple layers, but the multi-core flat cables used therein are conventionally used. Due to the large pitch of 1.27mm, it cannot meet the demands for higher density packaging and miniaturization. In other words, although there is a demand for electrical connectors for multi-core flat cables with a pitch of 0.635mm, which is half the pitch of the conventionally used 1.27mm pitch, we have developed a connector with high reliability that can meet the demand. There was a demand for an electrical connector that was inexpensive and could be mass-produced.

In the above explanation, the terminals of the multi-core flat cable are arranged in the cable wiring member with the core wires exposed and distributed to the left and right, but the present invention is not limited to this. Alternatively, without exposing the core wires, the single wires of the cable may be separated one by one and distributed to the left and right and arranged on the cable wiring member.

FIG. 16 shows yet another embodiment of the invention.
All of the contacts in the embodiments shown in FIGS. 1 to 8 had their contact portions and pressure contact portions formed in the same plane. With this type of contact configuration, the contact surface of the mating male contact is arranged in the extending direction of the housing, so the pitch is inevitably large, for example, the limit is about 1.27 mm, and the pitch is large. 1/2 of
Arrangement is not possible at 0.635mm. Furthermore, since the contacts themselves are arranged in the extending direction, small pitches, for example, 0.635mm pitch,
I can't create an array. For this reason, it is necessary to arrange the contacts in at least two rows with a pitch of, for example, 1.27 mm. For this reason, the size of the connector has inevitably been increased.

Therefore, we reduced the size of the connector to match the pitch of the ideal multi-core flat cable.
Good contact arrangement with 0.635mm pitch. The embodiment shown in FIG. 16 is a specific example of the configuration. The contact 100 in this embodiment has a contact portion 110 similar to the contacts 10A and 10B in the previous embodiment.
It has a pressure contact part 120 and an intermediate part 130,
Of these, the contact portion 110 and the pressure contact portion 120 may have substantially the same configuration as the contacts 10A and 10B described above, and therefore will not be repeatedly described in detail. The contact portion 110 and the pressure contact portion 120 are connected to the intermediate portion 130 by a bent portion 131 . This bent portion 13
1, the direction of pressure contact with the pressure contact part 120 and the contact direction with respect to the contact part 110 are parallel to each other, and the contact part 1 is parallel to the extending surface of the pressure contact part 120.
The extending surfaces of 10 are approximately perpendicular to each other. Other configurations of the intermediate portion 130 may be substantially the same as those of the contacts 10A and 10B described above, and therefore will not be described in detail again. In this embodiment, two types of contacts 100 are prepared. That is, by preparing two types of bent portions 131 with different lengths and arranging these two types of contacts alternately and in opposite directions, the pressure contact portions 120 can be arranged in a staggered arrangement in two rows. , four rows, and the contact portions 110 are arranged in a straight line in one row. The connector configured in this manner does not require the second insulating housing 30 described above, and the width of the insulating housing inserted into the mating connector can be reduced.

FIGS. 18 and 19 show another embodiment of the method for processing the terminals of a multi-core flat cable. That is, in the method for processing the terminals of a multi-core flat cable in the embodiment described above, the terminals of the cable are separated and distributed to the left and right and incorporated into the cable wiring member, but at this time, the terminal pitch of the cables distributed to the left and right is If the cable is misaligned, it may be difficult to fit into the cable arrangement groove 44 of the cable wiring member. Therefore, it is preferable to fix the left and right terminals with adhesive tape to prevent pitch deviation. The specific processing method will be explained below with reference to FIGS. 18 and 19.

FIG. 20 is a diagram for explaining another embodiment of terminal processing of a multi-core flat cable. In a multi-core flat cable, it is sometimes necessary not only to connect the aligned core wires to a connector as they are, but also to cross the core wires for connection. In order to meet such needs, as shown in FIG. 20, the insulation coating 51 at the terminal of the cable 50 is removed to separate and expose the core wires 52, and then the desired core wires are covered with an insulator (see FIG. (not shown)
are interposed and crossed, and the position is fixed using a fusion tape 55.

(1) At the end of a multi-core flat cable, the cable cores are distributed to the left and right, placed on the cable wiring member, and then connected to the connector block by pressure connection, so even multi-core flat cables with extremely small pitches can be separated. Since the pitch of the cable is double the pitch of the cable, it is possible to connect the contactor by pressure contact with the conventional high reliability.

(2) A large number of contacts are arranged in multiple rows, and the center of the contact part of the contact is different from the center of the pressure welding part, so the wide contact part is arranged in multiple rows. Since the narrow press-contact parts are arranged in rows at the same pitch and are arranged in a staggered manner, the connector as a whole can be miniaturized.

(6) In the case of the embodiment described with reference to FIG. 1, among the four rows of contacts, the middle two rows of contacts are bent outward;
The multi-core flat cable can be placed vertically in the center of the connector block, and this vertical cable pullout allows the connectors to be installed side by side along the longitudinal sides of the connector. , it becomes possible to increase the density of the set.
