BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION In known air knife coating machines, the coating material is applied at a distance from the air knife device.
It is first applied onto a moving paper web. Thus, the coating material on the paper web has time to undergo changes before it is processed by the air knife. Thus, a portion of the liquid component of the coating material typically penetrates into the paper web, while another portion evaporates.
This increases the viscosity and dry solids content of the coating material, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the air knife. For this reason, air knife coating machines used to have approx.
Relatively low web speeds of 300 to 400 m/min were used and the dry solids content of the coating material was relatively low, typically less than 40%. Furthermore, the use of air knives often caused foaming problems due to the high moisture content of the coating material which resulted in large amounts of excess coating material being applied onto the paper web.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the coating is applied over a distance in the longitudinal direction of the paper web approximately equal to the distance between the air knife and the rear of the coating material application zone. A substance is applied. This usually gives the best coating results. It is also advantageous that the cross-section of the coating material application duct continuously reduces in the direction towards the paper web. This accelerates the flow of the coating material within the applicator, thereby eliminating locations with low flow rates where impurities can accumulate.

This applicator typically applies a 20 to 50% surplus of coating material onto the paper web, and this surplus is removed by an air knife device. Desired application amount is 10
g/cm 2 , this applicator approx. 12 to 15 g/cm 2
Apply on the paper. However, even if the supply of coating material is adjusted so that there is no substantial surplus of coating material, this air knife will not blow away the excess coating material and Affects quality favorably. Because of this,
It is important that the function of the applicator is adjustable so that the excess amount of coating substance applied can approach zero.

The moving paper web passes through a coating material applicator, which spreads the coating material onto the paper web. The side of the applicator from which the paper web enters the application zone is called the front side of the applicator, and the side from which the paper web leaves the applicator is called the rear side. A preferred embodiment of the invention includes an adjustable slot or gap on the rear side of the applicator and between the applicator and the paper web. By varying the height of this slot, the amount of coating material spread onto the paper web is adjusted. In the coating machine according to the invention, it is also possible to use other types of applicators, for example applicators in which a flexible coating blade or coating bar is pressed against the paper web at the trailing edge of the coating zone. Also, various extrusion applicators may be used. It has proven advantageous to arrange a slot or gap for the overflow of the coating material at the leading edge of the applicator. This has the advantage that impurities that have accumulated in the applicator can flow out via the overflow slot. The use of overflow applicators of this type in paper web coating processes is known per se.

The coating machine according to the invention works best if the paper web, on the side left uncoated, is supported by a support drum at the location of the coating material applicator and air knife. Because of the double-sided coating of the paper web, it is also possible not to use any supports at all, but instead to use the device according to the invention on both sides of the paper web. For that,
Preferably, the coating material applicator and air knife are arranged symmetrically on opposite sides of the paper web. If a support drum is used, its most advantageous diameter is typically a minimum of 400 mm and a maximum of 1300 mm. The most advantageous paper web speed is higher than 400 m/min, preferably around 600 m/min. However, according to the invention, advantageous results are obtained even at fairly low web speeds.

The diameter is, for example, 0.5m.
That's fine. The coating substance is spread onto the paper web by means of an applicator 3 into which the coating substance is pumped via a conduit 4 which also serves as a tilting axis for the applicator 3. The tilting movement of the applicator is achieved by one or several sets of power cylinders 5. An adjustable support 6 determines the exact working position of the applicator. The power cylinder 5 presses the applicator 3 against the support 6. This applicator has a feed duct that narrows continuously in the direction towards the paper web 1 in order to obtain a continuously accelerating flow of coating substance.

At the trailing edge of the applicator there is a blade 7 which does not come into contact with the paper web 1 but leaves a narrow gap 8 between itself and the paper web 1. The coating material 9 supplied from the applicator is absorbed by the paper web and travels with the paper web to the position of the nozzle of the air knife device 10, where the excess coating material is blown off the paper web. Applicator 3
The distance a between the trailing edge and the nozzle of the air knife device 10 is such that the paper web 1 normally covers this distance by less than 5 msec;
It should be narrow enough to move within a period of preferably less than 3 msec. Furthermore, the distance between the leading and trailing edges of the applicator is less than 15 mec, which is the time required for the entire coating process, i.e., for a point on the paper web to move from the leading edge 12 of the applicator to the air knife 10. It is narrowed to less than 9 msec if possible.
In the case of high paper web speed, the paper web reduces distance a by 0.3 m.
sec, and the time for the entire coating process can be adjusted accordingly to 0.6 to 0.9 msec. The viscosity of the coating material is reduced due to the strong shear stress created in the coating material layer by the blade 7 or by any other similar component. The condition of this coating layer does not change significantly before the coating layer is affected by the air knife 10, thereby improving the effectiveness of the air knife function.

At the front edge of the applicator 3 there is an adjustable edge member 11 located at a considerable distance from the paper web 1, whereby a fairly wide gap 12 is formed between said member itself and the paper web. Ru. The coating material flows continuously from the applicator through this gap. This overflow is regulated to a relatively small level by keeping the pressure in the applicator low. The coating material flowing out through the gap 12 is collected in a collecting tank 13 and from there is sucked back into the coating material flow system via an outlet pipe 14. The collection tank 13 has double walls, and the cooling water is guided into the space between them. Water cooling keeps the inner surface of tank 13 cool so that water condenses thereon so that the coating material does not stick as easily to this surface. Inside the collection tank 13, the pressure is kept at a level slightly below atmospheric pressure by suction in the outlet pipe 14. This reduces the diffusion of the coating substance into the surroundings. blade 7
On the outside is a water-cooled cover 15 which reduces fouling of the blade 7 by coating substances in the same way that water cooling of the walls of the tank 13 keeps it clean.

The amount of coating material that the applicator applies to the paper web 1 is, under normal conditions, greater than the desired final coating amount. Although the surplus amount is usually about 20 to 50%, it is possible to apply the coating material so as not to provide a substantial surplus amount of the coating material. This is done by pressing the coating blade 7 towards the paper web 1 with an appropriate force.
