(Industrial Application Field) The present invention relates to a thermal transfer medium used for thermal transfer recording, and particularly to a transfer medium that can perform high-density printing even on transfer paper with a rough surface. (Prior art) Thermal transfer media used in thermal transfer printers have traditionally been typically those in which a heat-melting ink layer made of pigment dispersed in wax is formed on a base material such as polyester film, or It has been proposed that a colored ink layer in which a pigment is dispersed in a plastic binder is accompanied by a hot-melt adhesive layer or a hot-melt peeling layer. (Problem that the invention aims to solve) When printing at high density on paper with a rough surface,
When a heat-sensitive transfer medium having a heat-melting ink layer in which pigments are dispersed in wax is provided on a base material, the following problems occur. In other words, when dispersing pigments in wax, the concentration is limited to around 20% at most due to the limit of coating suitability, and there is a limit to how high the concentration can be achieved. Therefore, in order to obtain high printing density, the ink layer must be thick. As a result, defects such as peeling of the ink layer from the base material, increased printing energy, and decreased sharpness of printing cannot be avoided. Regarding print density, in this type of case, the density can be increased by increasing the film thickness on thermal transfer media due to the exposure of the surface fibers of the transfer paper as the ink penetrates into the transfer paper during transfer. The general trend has been that even if it were secured, the print density would be much lower than that. In order to prevent this phenomenon, the colored ink layer is made by dispersing pigments at a high concentration in a thermoplastic binder that does not completely melt during transfer, and a thermofusible layer that has adhesive properties to the transfer paper is placed on top of it. It has been proposed to provide a releasable coating between the substrate and the colored ink layer, if necessary. These media are characterized by having the coloring function and the adhesion function to the transfer paper divided into separate layers, and by changing the binder, the concentration limit of pigment dispersion in wax can be widened, resulting in a thinner coating with high performance. However, when applied to paper with a rough surface, the thickness of the adhesive layer must be sufficiently thick to ensure sufficient transfer to the receiving paper, and the overall film thickness is Therefore, it was difficult to take advantage of the thin film thickness. (Purpose) The present invention was developed in view of the above-mentioned circumstances, and an object of the present invention is to provide a heat-sensitive transfer medium capable of performing high-density transfer recording even on a transfer recording medium with a rough surface. (Means for solving the problem) In order to achieve the above purpose, in this invention,
The concentration of the colorant in the ink layer of a heat-sensitive transfer medium formed by forming a heat-melting colored ink layer on a base material is made to increase sequentially as it gets closer to the base material, and the colorant concentration is increased in the thickness direction of the layer. It was made to have a slope. (Details of the invention) Figure 1 shows the cross-sectional structure of the thermal transfer medium 1 of the invention, where 2 is a base material, and 3, 4, 5, and 6 are heat-melting colored ink layers (hereinafter referred to as ink layers). are shown respectively. As the base material 2, a plastic film such as polyester resin, polycarbonate resin, polyimide resin, or polystyrene resin, paper such as glassine paper or capacitor paper, metal foil, or a composite of the above-mentioned materials can be used. The ink layer provided on this base material is multilayered. In one embodiment shown in FIG. 1, an ink layer 3, an ink layer 4, an ink layer 5
and an ink layer 6. Each ink layer is made of ink mainly composed of a thermoplastic resin and/or wax mixed with a colorant such as a pigment and/or a dye, but the mixing ratio of the colorant in each ink layer is different.
That is, the mixing ratio of the coloring material in each ink layer is set to increase sequentially as it gets closer to the base material 2, and the coloring material concentration is set to increase sequentially as it gets closer to the base material 2. This structure was adopted to overcome the drawbacks of conventional thermal transfer media, which form an adhesive film on the ink layer. Since the contamination of the material is undesirable, in order to improve the color density in the ink layer transferred onto the transfer target, it is necessary to separate the adhesive function part and the coloring function part in the thickness direction of the film, and to use adhesive and rough surface paper. In order to maintain the filling effect of the surface irregularities, the concentration of each ink layer should be increased by increasing the coloring density of the layer near the base material 2, and increasing the coloring density of the layer farther from the base material 2. This is based on the knowledge that it is sufficient to use a structure that reduces the coloring density of the material. A specific configuration based on this knowledge is shown in FIG. The base material 2 of the thermal transfer medium 1 shown in FIG. 1 is a polyester film with a thickness of 5.7μ, and one side thereof has an ink layer 3 with a thickness of 0.5μ, an ink layer 4 with a thickness of 0.5μ, and an ink layer 4 with a thickness of 1.0μ. An ink layer 5 having a thickness of μ and an ink layer 6 having a thickness of 2.0 μ are laminated in this order. These ink layers are made of ink mainly composed of thermoplastic resin and/or wax mixed with coloring materials such as pigments and/or dyes. The content concentration of the colorant in each ink layer is 30% in ink layer 3, 15% in ink layer 4, and 15% in ink layer 5.
It is set to 7% for the ink layer 6, and 2% for the ink layer 6. On the other hand, FIGS. 2 and 3 show cross-sectional structures of conventional thermal transfer media 10 and 20. The thermal transfer medium 10 has a colored ink layer with a thickness of 0.5μ consisting of a colored ink made by kneading 30% of a coloring material mainly of thermoplastic resin and/or wax on a base material 11 made of a polyester film with a thickness of 5.7μ. 12 and an adhesive layer 13 having a thickness of 3.5 μm and made of ink mainly composed of thermoplastic resin and/or wax and containing no coloring material. In addition, the thermal transfer medium 2
0 has a colored heat-fusible ink layer 22 with a thickness of 4.5μ made of an ink mainly composed of thermoplastic resin and/or wax and containing 10% of a coloring agent on a base material 21 made of a polyester film with a thickness of 5.7μ. It is provided. The following table shows the results of solid printing on bond paper with a base smoothness of 3 seconds using each of the thermal transfer media 1, 10, and 20 configured as described above using a thermal transfer printer equipped with a line type thermal head with a dot density of 8 dots/mm. show. The reflection density was measured using a Macbeth RD918 reflection densitometer manufactured by Macbeth.

This is believed to be the result of the transfer of all the ink layers from the substrate to the receiving paper due to the effect of adhesion. Containing a coloring agent also in the part involved in adhesion to the transfer paper has the effect of hiding the surface of the transfer paper and increasing the reflection density when printed, but in the present invention, this effect is not maintained. , and in order to ensure uniform transfer to the receiving paper by action in the layers involved in adhesion,
Since the content of the coloring material in each ink layer is made smaller as the layer is closer to the surface layer, the thermal transfer medium of the present invention allows printing even on the surface, even when printing on paper with a rough surface. As shown, good recording is performed without blurring or missing prints. (Effects of the invention) According to the thermal transfer medium of the present invention, it is possible to print with high density even on transfer paper with a rough surface, where conventional media could not print well, and it is possible to use thermal transfer transfer paper. The range of possibilities is further expanded.
