The present invention relates to novel phenylalkylethylene-based nematic liquid crystal compounds useful as electro-optic display materials. The novel nematic liquid crystal compound provided by the present invention has the general formula: [In the formula, R and R' represent a linear alkyl group having 1 to 9 carbon atoms, and the cyclohexane ring has a trans (equatorial-equatorial) configuration. ] It is a compound represented by Typical liquid crystal display cells include M. There is a guest-host type cell proposed by [O.F. APPLIED PHYSICS 45 , 4718 (1974)]. The current mainstream among these liquid crystal display cells is a TN cell, which is a type of field effect cell. In this TN type cell, as reported by G.Bauer in Mol.Cryst.Liq.Cryst. 63 45 (1981), interference fringes occur on the cell surface, which impairs the appearance of the cell. In order to prevent this, it is necessary to set the product of the refractive index anisotropy (Δn) of the liquid crystal material filled in the cell and the cell thickness (d) μm to a certain value. In the liquid crystal display cell used practically,
The value of Δn·d is set to 0.5, 1.0, 1.6, or 2.2. Since the value of Δn·d is thus set to a constant value, the value of d can be made small by using a liquid crystal material with a large value of Δn. As the value of d becomes small, the response time (τ) becomes small according to the well-known relation τ∝d 2 . Furthermore, the response time (τ) is determined by the viscosity (η) of the liquid crystal material.
There is a proportional relationship (τ∝η). In other words, liquid crystal materials with large Δn values and low viscosity are extremely important materials for manufacturing high-speed response liquid crystal display cells. On the other hand, most of the liquid crystal materials that can be used for practical purposes are usually prepared by mixing several or more components consisting of a compound that has a nematic phase near room temperature and a compound that has a nematic phase above room temperature. be done. Most of the above-mentioned mixed liquid crystals currently in practical use are at least -30°C to +65°C.
Although it is required to have a nematic phase over the entire temperature range of ℃, as the applications of liquid crystal display cells become more diverse, there is a demand for liquid crystal materials that extend the nematic liquid crystal temperature range to higher temperatures. There is. Currently, some of the best viscosity reducing agents used to produce fast-response liquid crystal display cells include the formula

The compound of formula () according to the present invention is a novel nematic liquid crystal compound that has improved this drawback and has a low viscosity, a relatively high Δn, and a high N-I transition temperature. Therefore, by mixing the compound of formula () with various parent liquid crystals,
Mixed liquid crystal materials with low viscosity, large Δn and high N-I transition temperature can be prepared. The compound of formula () according to the present invention can be produced according to the following production method. the below described()~
R and R' in each formula () have the same meaning as R and R' in the formula (), respectively. Step 1 - A compound of formula () is prepared by reacting trans-4-n-alkyl-1-phenylcyclohexane with anhydrous aluminum chloride in carbon disulfide or nitrobenzene. Second step - The compound of formula () produced in the first step is reacted with a reducing agent such as lithium aluminum hydride in anhydrous ether or anhydrous tetrahydrofuran to produce a compound of formula (). Third stage - crude formula produced in the second stage ()
A dehydrating agent such as potassium hydrogen sulfate is added to the compound, followed by heating and dehydration to produce a compound of formula (). Table 1 lists the transition temperatures, viscosities, and Δn of representative compounds of formula () thus produced.
