DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a sizing agent for glass fibers for reinforcing thermoplastic resins, particularly polyacetal resins. Due to its excellent mechanical properties, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance, polyacetal resin has a wide range of applications, being molded into gears, gears, springs, etc. However, because it is chemically inert, it is used in glass fibers and Even if a reinforcing material such as powder is mixed in, it has the disadvantage that it is difficult to achieve a reinforcing effect compared to other resins such as nylon, polycarbonate, and polyethylene terephthalate. Several methods have been proposed to improve this point (Special Publication No. 46-25259, Special Publication No. 55-18741).
No. 46-6388, JP-A No. 55-157645, and JP-A No. 58-98356), all of which significantly improve the strength by modifying the polyacetal resin. However, the modification of polyacetal resin has the drawback of being expensive. The purpose of the present invention is to significantly improve the strength not by modifying the resin as described above, but by using a sizing agent for glass fibers. That is, the present invention provides a sizing agent for glass fibers, particularly for reinforcing polyacetal resin, containing an alkyl acrylate/styrene copolymer emulsion or a polyalkyl acrylate emulsion, a silane coupling agent, acetic acid, and a cationic lubricant. It is related to. The alkyl acrylate/styrene copolymer emulsion and polyalkyl acrylate emulsion used here constitute a film-forming component of the sizing agent components. In the sizing agents of the present invention, these emulsions are generally used in concentrations ranging from about 1 to 10% by weight solids. Organic silane compounds used as silane coupling agents include γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, β-aminoethyl-γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, and β-carboxyethyltriethoxysilane. etc. are valid. These organosilane coupling agents are used in an amount of about 0.1 to 2.0% by weight, preferably about
It is used in concentrations of 0.3-1% by weight. In the above-mentioned sizing agent, the cationic lubricant is used to prevent the glass fiber filaments from being damaged or broken due to mutual abrasion, and from becoming fuzzed. Conventional cationic lubricants can be used. This cationic lubricant has a concentration of about 0.01 to 0.5% by weight in the sizing agent, similar to known sizing agents.
Preferably concentrations of 0.05 to 0.2% by weight are generally used. Acetic acid is added to make the above-mentioned cationic lubricant water-soluble, and is generally used in an amount of about 0.05 to 1.0% by weight based on the total amount of the sizing composition. The sizing agent of the present invention comprising the above-mentioned components can be applied to glass fibers in a conventional manner. For example, it can be applied with a size applicator to the glass fiber filament being spun from a bushing, or another sizing agent can be applied and sized during unwinding of the bundled, wound, and dried glass fiber strand cake. Impregnate and dry the agent. It can also be applied as a so-called secondary coat. The amount deposited is generally 0.2-2.0% by weight, preferably 0.5-1.0% by weight. The sized glass fibers are generally applied to the resin as chopped strands cut to length, for example 3 mm, although other fiber forms are not excluded. The present invention is applicable to any molding method; for example, when chopped strands are used as a reinforcing fiber raw material, resin pellets are usually
For example, after blending chopped strands at a ratio of 25% by weight and mixing them uniformly, using an extruder,
The resin pellets are kneaded, extruded, and cut into appropriate lengths to obtain glass fiber-containing resin pellets, which are then used as a molding raw material and molded into desired products using, for example, an injection molding machine. Glass fibers sized with the sizing agent of the present invention are particularly used as reinforcing fibers for polyacetal resins. Thus, the sizing agent of the present invention containing the alkyl acrylate-styrene copolymer or polyalkyl acrylate as a binder component exhibits excellent cohesiveness for glass fiber strands,
It can be kneaded into polyacetal resin without substantially causing yarn cracking or filamentation in the chopped strands, and has extremely excellent affinity and compatibility with the polyacetal resin of the matrix. It is possible to provide molded products of glass fiber reinforced polyacetal resin with good strength properties. Although the reason why glass fiber reinforced polyacetal resin molded products with excellent mechanical strength can be obtained by using the sizing agent of the present invention is not necessarily clear, it has good cohesiveness for glass fiber strands, This is thought to be because the integrity of the strands is well maintained and a crosslink is formed between the glass fiber and the polyacetal resin via the organic silane coupling agent and the alkyl acrylate polymer. Next, the present invention will be further explained by examples.
However, it goes without saying that the present invention is not limited to these Examples. Example 1 A sizing agent having the following composition was prepared by dispersing the following components in water. 40% butyl acrylate/styrene copolymer emulsion (contains styrene)
10.0% by weight (20% by weight) γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane
0.5% by weight Tetraethylenepentamine/stearic acid condensate 0.2 〃 Acetic acid 0.1 〃 Water 89.2 〃 Apply the above sizing agent to the glass fiber filament that is being spun from the 800-hole bushing using a size applicator in an amount of about 0.5 to 0.7% by weight. and then immediately focused into one strand (filament diameter 13μ) to obtain a glass fiber cake. After drying this at 120°C to 130°C for about 10 hours, it was sent to a cutter and cut into 3 mm lengths. The obtained chopped strands were mixed with polyacetal resin [trade name: Zyuracon (manufactured by Polyplastics Co., Ltd.)] to a fiber content of 25% by weight, and then kneaded, extruded and cut using an extruder. Glass fiber-containing pellets were obtained. This pellet was molded into a test piece according to JIS K6810 using an in-line screw injection molding machine.
It was then subjected to tensile, bending and impact tests according to JIS K6810. The results are shown in the table below. Example 2 A glass fiber-reinforced polyacetal test piece was prepared in the same manner as in Example 1, except that the butyl acrylate/styrene copolymer emulsion in Example 1 was replaced with 40% polybutyl acrylate emulsion, and a strength test was conducted. Served. The results are shown in the table below. Example 3 The results shown in the table below were obtained in the same manner as in Example 2, except that γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane in Example 2 was replaced with γ-glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane. Example 4 The results shown in the table below were obtained in the same manner as in Example 2, except that γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane in Example 2 was replaced with β-aminoethyl-γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. Comparative Example 1 For comparison, a sizing agent having the following composition, which is a known general sizing agent, was prepared, and a glass fiber-reinforced polyacetal test piece was prepared in the same manner as in Example 1, and subjected to a strength test. The results are shown in the table below. 50% polyvinyl acetate emulsion 8.0% by weight γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane
0.5 〃 Tetraethylenepentamine/stearic acid condensate 0.2 〃 Acetic acid 0.1 〃 Water 91.2 〃 Comparative Example 2 Same as Example 3 except that the polybutyl acrylate emulsion in Example 3 was replaced with 40% polyurethane emulsion. A glass fiber-reinforced polyacetal test piece was prepared using the method described above and subjected to a strength test. The results are shown in the table below. 【table】
