An object of the present invention is to provide a color liquid crystal display device in which display diversity and display quality in color display are improved. In a color liquid crystal display device in which first and second liquid crystal elements are laminated, each having a light-transmitting substrate, the first liquid crystal element is provided over the entire surface of the light-transmitting substrate in the thickness direction, and has a transparent substrate. a plurality of color selection members each selecting one of a plurality of predetermined colors of light; and a predetermined color provided in a display area on the liquid crystal layer side of the transparent light substrate and to be displayed in the display area. a display electrode having a translucent property formed in a range corresponding to the plurality of color selection members selected in accordance with the above, and the second liquid crystal element includes: an entire surface of the translucent substrate in one direction in the thickness direction; This is a color liquid crystal display device characterized in that it includes a transparent electrode provided over the entire area.

Function According to the present invention, in the first liquid crystal element, the display electrode is formed corresponding to a desired color selection member, and by applying a voltage to the display electrode, for example, transmitted light transmitted through the liquid crystal layer is transmitted to the color selection member. One predetermined color is selected by , and the predetermined color is thereby displayed in the display area.

In addition, by stacking the first and second liquid crystal elements so that no light is transmitted when no voltage is applied to the display ti and transparent electrodes of the first and second liquid crystal elements, that is, the liquid crystal molecules closest to each other in the first and second liquid crystal elements are stacked. By stacking the layers so that their orientation directions are perpendicular to each other, a so-called normally black display can be performed. In this stacked state, the second liquid crystal element functions only as an optical compensator.

Therefore, in the first liquid crystal element, the transmitted light that has become elliptically polarized by passing through the liquid crystal layer corresponding to the display electrode to which no voltage is applied and the liquid crystal layer corresponding to the area where the display electrode is not formed is transmitted to the second liquid crystal element. When transmitted through the liquid crystal layer of the liquid crystal element, it is subjected to optical rotation in the opposite direction, and the incident polarized light from the liquid crystal layer of the first liquid crystal element to the liquid crystal layer of the second liquid crystal element has an extraordinary light component and a normal light component. However, by exchanging each other, the elliptically polarized light cancels out and returns to linearly polarized light. Therefore, the light transmitted through the region where no display electrode is formed and the region corresponding to the display region to which no voltage is applied is completely compensated by the second liquid crystal element, and light leakage can be prevented. As a result, it is possible to display complete black without coloring, and it is possible to improve the contrast in so-called normally black display in which the background color is black.

Furthermore, by applying a voltage to the transparent electrode of the second liquid crystal element in the stacked state described above, the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in the direction of the electric field, and when no voltage is applied, the light transmitted through the first liquid crystal element is Can transmit through two liquid crystal elements. This makes it possible to perform so-called normally white display in which the background color is white.

In this manner, two types of display, normally black display and normally white display, can be performed in one liquid crystal display device by simply switching application/non-application of voltage to the second liquid crystal element. At this time, if three types of color selection members that select red, green, and blue are used, for example, when a voltage is applied to the display electrode corresponding to the color selection member that selects red in the normally black display, the voltage increases. The applied liquid crystal layer transmits light, so
Red is displayed in the display area. In this state, if you switch to normally white display, only the part of the liquid crystal layer corresponding to the red color selection member will not transmit light.
Light blue (cyan) is displayed in the display area by a mixture of green light and blue light.

The color display liquid crystal element 22 is controlled by a color display liquid crystal element drive circuit 45. The color display liquid crystal element drive circuit 45 applies a voltage to the transparent electrode [i28] via the signal line r1 based on the display control signal from the display control circuit 47, and applies a voltage to the selected segment via the signal line group 12. A voltage is applied to electrode 26. This allows the color display liquid crystal element 22 to perform color display.

In this state, only the compensation liquid crystal element 23 is driven and no voltage is applied to the compensation liquid crystal element 23, so-called normally black display is performed. The transmitted light that becomes elliptically polarized light by passing through the liquid crystal layer 29 to which no voltage is applied is because the liquid crystal molecules are oriented in the opposite direction to the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer 29 when passing through the liquid crystal layer 33. is subjected to optical rotation in the opposite direction, and furthermore,
Since the extraordinary light component and the normal light component of the polarized light incident on the liquid crystal layer 33 from the liquid crystal layer 29 are arranged so that the closest liquid crystal molecules are orthogonal to each other, the elliptically polarized light is canceled out by exchanging with each other.
