Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent toner scattering and toner fog by using resin coated carrier having pores on its surface in the case of developing an electrostatic latent image by holding developer on the outer periphery of a sleeve which moves around a fixed magnet body and bringing it into contact with a photosensitive body. CONSTITUTION:The developer supplied to a developing sleeve 6 is held by the magnetic force of the magnet body 7 and a fixed quantity of developer is carried to a developing area by a developer regulating member 8. The developer which reaches a pole N1 on an upstream side receives repulsive magnetic field by the adjacent same poles and force by the rotation, and a cascade developing occurs, thereby improving developing efficiency. However, in this magnetic brush developing method, the developer is severely stirred on the developing sleeve 6 near the same magnetic pole and the toner is easily scattered and spilt because of the cascade developing. Then, such a trouble is eliminated by using the carrier consisting of a carrier core material 1, a resin coating layer 2 with which the core material 1 is coated and the pores 3 formed on the surface of the layer 2.

The magnetic brush/development method uses magnetic force to attract a two-component developer consisting of a mixture of carrier and toner, forms the developer in the shape of a brush at the magnetic pole, and rubs the electrostatic latent image on the photoreceptor. However, in order to meet today's demands for high-speed copying, various improvements have been made to the magnetic brush development method. As one of the improvements, a method using the same magnetic poles has been disclosed (for example, Japanese Patent Publication No. 60-30946, Japanese Patent Publication No. 58
-43739, JP-A-49-24147, etc.).

However, in the same magnetic brush type magnetic brush development method, the developer is subjected to a strong stirring action near the same magnetic poles and between the same magnetic poles, and avalanche development of the developer occurs, so that toner scattering is likely to occur. Therefore, if the amount of charge of the toner supplied to the same magnetic pole portion is insufficient or uneven, the poorly charged toner will scatter, causing problems such as contamination inside the machine.

As for the configuration of the developing device of the present invention, it is sufficient that magnetic poles of the same polarity are arranged next to each other in the portion of the fixed magnet inside the developing sleeve facing the photoreceptor, and the contact state between the magnetic brush on the developing sleeve and the photoreceptor is are N1 and N2 as shown in Figure 4.
When both of the best magnetic brushes come into contact, as shown in Figure 5, when only the magnetic plan on the magnetic pole (Nl) located upstream with respect to the rotational direction of the developing sleeve comes into contact, as shown in Figure 6. Any case in which only the magnetic plan on the magnetic pole (N2) located on the downstream side contacts is acceptable.

As mentioned above, in the same magnetic pole type magnetic brush development method, the developer is vigorously stirred on the developing sleeve (6) near the same magnetic pole, and cascade development occurs, resulting in toner scattering and toner spillage. is likely to occur. In particular, toner scattering and toner spillage are largely caused by the presence of poorly charged toner and agglomerated toner. The problems of toner scattering and toner spillage can be improved by using a carrier having a large number of pores on its surface, as will be described later, as the carrier constituting the developer.

以下に、該キャリアについて詳述する。The carrier will be explained in detail below.

In this way, the presence of pores on the surface of the resin-coated carrier ensures sufficient contact between the toner particles (4) and the carrier particles even when used together with toner (even toner with a small particle size). The toner can be charged quickly, each toner particle can be sufficiently uniformly charged, and toner scattering due to charging failure can be prevented.

In particular, if the toner used in combination with a carrier is a toner with a small particle size, the smaller the particle size of the toner, the smaller the toner's heat capacity and the more likely it is to become spent. From this point of view, coating resins with good mold releasability, such as linicone resins or polyolefin resins, are preferred. The surface of the carrier of the present invention is made up of a carrier coating resin of 70% or more, preferably 90% or more,
It is more preferable to cover 95% or more. If the coverage is less than 70%, the characteristics of the carrier core material itself (unstable environmental resistance, decreased electrical resistance, unstable charging) will be strongly visible through the background, making it impossible to take advantage of the advantages of the resin coating.

The filling rate of the carrier core material is set to about 90 W[% or more, preferably 95 Vt% or more. The filling rate may be interpreted as indirectly regulating the thickness of the resin coating layer of the carrier, and as the carrier core material filling rate becomes smaller than 9Qvt%, the coating layer becomes too thick and the developer I actually becomes thinner. Even if applied, the durability and charge stability required for the developer are not satisfied due to peeling of the coating layer, increase in the amount of charge, etc., and the image quality is poor in fine line reproducibility and image density is reduced. It is also possible to express the resin coating layer thickness indirectly by specific gravity. The specific gravity of the carrier of the present invention is greatly influenced by the type of carrier core material, but as long as the above carrier core material is used, the specific gravity of the carrier of the present invention is preferably 3.5 to 7.5, preferably 4.0 to 6.01. It shows a value within the range of about 4.0 to 5.5. If the value is outside this range, the same disadvantages as those caused by a carrier that is not coated with an appropriate filling rate as described above will occur.

On the other hand, if it is larger than 1 x 101' Ω·Cm, the toner is excessively charged, making it impossible to obtain an appropriate image density. The electrical resistance can also be viewed as an indirect expression of the resin coverage and carrier filling rate described above.

Addition of metal oxides, metal fluorides, and metal nitrides is effective in further increasing chargeability. It is believed that this effect is produced by the synergistic charging effects of each component and the toner due to the contact between the toner and the complex interface composed of these compounds, the coating resin, and the core material.

Addition of carbon blank is effective in improving developability and obtaining images with high image density and clear contrast. It is thought that this is because the addition of conductive fine particles such as carbon black lowers the electrical resistance of the carrier appropriately, and the leakage and accumulation of charges are performed in a well-balanced manner.

One of the characteristics of conventional binder-type carriers is that they have excellent halftone reproducibility and gradation reproducibility, but in the case of the resin-coated carrier of the present invention, magnetic powder is added to the resin coating layer. As a result, a carrier with excellent gradation reproducibility can be obtained. This is thought to be because the addition of magnetic powder to the resin coating layer resulted in a surface composition similar to that of the binder-type carrier, and the chargeability and specific gravity approached those of the binder-type carrier.

The size, amount, etc. of the above-mentioned additives are determined by the pore morphology, coverage rate,
There are no particular limitations on the size of the fine particles as long as they satisfy various properties such as electrical resistance, but in relation to the preferred method of manufacturing the carrier of the present invention described later, the size of the fine particles may be determined by aggregation in a resin solution or dehydrated hexane, for example. Any particle diameter is sufficient as long as it can be uniformly dispersed to form a slurry without causing any damage, and specifically, the volume average particle diameter is 2 to 0.001. c+a, preferably 1-0. It is sufficient that the thickness is about 01 μm.

In particular, when using the present invention with a filling rate set in the range of 90 to 97 wt%, it is preferable to add additives such as fine particles with a charge imparting function or conductive fine particles to the resin coating layer. When the filling rate of the carrier is as small as about 90 wt% and the thickness of the coating layer is relatively thick, when continuous copying of fine lines is performed using such a carrier, a problem arises in that the reproducibility decreases. The problem is solved by the addition of the above additives.

One of the preferred manufacturing methods is to disperse fine particle components soluble in a suitable solvent in advance in a coating resin solution, and after forming the coating layer, the fine particles are immersed in a soluble solvent to elute the soluble fine particle components. A method of forming pores on the surface of the coating layer can be mentioned. In this method, the pore size is determined by the particle size of the solvent-soluble fine particle component, the degree of dispersion, etc. Further, the coating layer can be formed by a powder capsule method, a spray dry method, or the like.

Furthermore, when adding fine particles or conductive fine particles having a charge imparting function as described above, it is sufficient to add these additives and make them exist in the coating resin solution, or to form pores such as ferrite. The use of particles that function both as electrically conductive fine particles and as conductive fine particles is advantageous from the viewpoint of the manufacturing method and properties.
