When welding is performed by irradiating a high-density energy heat source with a build-up material made of a mixture with a Ti alloy, first, the base material is melted, then the build-up material is melted, and the whole is melted to be almost homogeneous. Then, carbide (TiC) of titanium is precipitated in the process of cooling and solidifying, and this is finely distributed in the molten metal, whereby the buildup layer is hardened. Since this melting is performed so that the base material and the build-up material are mixed, the content of the Ti component is greater in the portion of the molten metal closer to the base material, and the amount of TiC precipitation is greater in the portion closer to the build-up surface. Since the number of grains increases, it is possible to have such a gradient structure distribution, which contributes to the relaxation of thermal stress and improves the wear resistance at high temperatures. Further, in the surface-hardening method according to the present invention, since a brittle intermetallic compound phase is not generated between the base material and the overlay layer, there is no concern that the overlay portion will fall off. In this case, by setting the content of Mo carbide in the build-up material to 10% by weight or more, the base material after the build-up becomes β-type titanium due to the inclusion of Mo which is a β-phase forming element, and wear resistance is improved. It will be done.
