Abstract

PURPOSE:To make a device compact by using a curved surface mirror having a concave or a convex as at least one mirror in the turning-back optical path of the reduction optical system of an optical read unit. CONSTITUTION:A curved surface mirror 12 or 11 having a concave or a convex is used as at least one mirror in the turning-back optical path of the reduction optical system. That is, the device consists of an optical read unit 4, a lamp 5 for document illumination, plane mirrors 6, a lens 7, a line sensor 8 like a one-dimensional CCD lamp, an optical path 10, and the convex lens 11 or the concave lens 12. The reflected light from the surface of a document 9 illuminated by the lamp 5 is turned by two plane mirrors 6 and the convex mirror 11 or the concave mirror 12 and passes the lens 7 and is made incident on the line sensor 8. In this case, the optical system is so designed that the concave mirror 11 is arranged on the outside of a focal length (f) of the lens 7 when being used but the concave mirror 12 is arranged on the inside of the focal length (f) of the lens 7 when being used.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a fixed original reading type image reading apparatus for moving an optical reading unit to read an original, and more particularly to reducing an original image onto an image reading element surface such as a CCD. In an optical reading unit in which a reduction type optical system for projection is composed of a folded optical path using a plurality of mirrors and a lens, the optical path length is shortened to achieve compactness.

The main scanning direction of the line sensor 8 is a direction perpendicular to the plane of the drawing, and an image of one line of the original 9 illuminated by the lamp 5 passes through the optical path 10 and passes through the line sensor 8.
The image is reduced and projected onto the reading surface of. The line sensor 8 electrically main-scans the projected one-dimensional image and outputs it as an image signal. Since the reduction type optical system has a long optical path length, the optical reading unit is made compact by folding the optical path using a plurality of plane mirrors. FIG. 10A is an example in which the optical path is folded back once, and FIG. 10B is an example in which the optical path is folded back five times to make it more compact.

In an optical reading unit of an image reading apparatus using a conventional reduction type optical system, a method of folding an optical path using a plane mirror has been adopted in order to make the unit compact. With this method, the actual size of the optical system can be shortened by increasing the number of turns, but on the other hand, the increase in the number of mirrors increases the accommodation space for the mirrors, and there is a limit to the compactness of the unit. In addition, the increase in the number of mirrors is limited because the amount of light decreases due to the reflectance.

FIG. 8 shows an embodiment of spherical aberration correction in the present invention. By curving the platen glass and curving the document surface, the spherical aberration generated by the curved mirror is canceled. In addition, spherical aberration can be absorbed by making the curved mirror an aspherical surface as a means for correcting spherical aberration due to the curved mirror. In this case, the platen glass can be made flat. However, this embodiment system is not necessary when the depth of field of the optical system is sufficient.
