The present invention relates to a magnetic recording medium, and an object thereof is to provide a magnetic recording medium that has a low noise level and is suitable for high-density recording. Magnetic recording media are usually made by applying magnetic powder together with a binder resin onto a substrate such as a polyester film to form a magnetic layer. A magnetic recording medium that can provide various excellent electromagnetic characteristics such as high sensitivity and high signal-to-noise ratio and is suitable for high-density recording is desired. For this reason, metal magnetic powder, which has a much higher coercive force than oxide-based magnetic powder, has traditionally been used as a recording element. Although the characteristics are improved, there is a drawback that the noise level cannot be sufficiently reduced, and as a result, the recording density cannot be improved any further. Therefore, in recent years, attempts have been made to sufficiently reduce noise and improve recording density by using extremely fine metal magnetic powder as the recording element of magnetic recording media. Although metal magnetic powder can reduce the noise level, it has an excessively high coercive force and poor corrosion resistance, so it is not suitable for use in magnetic recording media. The inventors conducted various studies in view of the current situation, and found that the specific surface area of the magnetic powder contained in the magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium is 35 by the BET method.
When using iron nitride magnetic powder with a particle size of m 2 /g or more and a coercive force of 1300 oersted or more, the particle size of the magnetic powder is extremely small, so the surface smoothness of the magnetic layer is good and the noise level is sufficient. The present inventors have discovered that a magnetic recording medium suitable for high-density recording can be obtained, which has a high coercive force, good acicularity, and good electromagnetic conversion characteristics, and has thus completed the present invention. The iron nitride magnetic powder used in this invention is a fine powder obtained by heat-treating metal iron fine particles in a mixed gas atmosphere of ammonia and hydrogen, and the particle shape of the metal iron magnetic fine particles, which is the starting material, is is maintained as it is, and a coercive force lower than that of metal iron magnetic fine particles can be obtained. Therefore, this type of iron nitride magnetic powder does not have a coercive force that is too high and is unsuitable for use in magnetic recording media, unlike fine metal magnetic powder, but is extremely fine and suitable for use in magnetic recording media. If this type of iron nitride magnetic powder having a coercive force is used, a magnetic recording medium having a sufficiently low noise level and suitable for high-density recording can be obtained. Such iron nitride magnetic powder must have a specific surface area of 35 m 2 /g or more and a coercive force by the BET method.
A material with a specific surface area of 1,300 Oe or more is preferably used; a material with a specific surface area of less than 35 m 2 /g cannot sufficiently reduce the noise level, and a material with a coercive force of less than 1,300 Oe is not preferred because high-density recording cannot be performed sufficiently. . In addition, the nitrogen content in the iron nitride magnetic powder is 15 to 15 in terms of N/Fe atomic ratio.
It is preferably within the range of 25%; if the nitrogen content is too low, the coercive force of the starting material metal iron particles cannot be sufficiently reduced, and very fine metal iron particles may be used as the starting material. In some cases, the coercive force becomes too high, making it undesirable for use in magnetic recording media. The starting material metal iron particles may contain silicon and nickel either singly or simultaneously, and when these silicon and nickel are contained, the metal iron particles have good acicularity, so they are nitrided. The iron nitride metal particles obtained also have good acicularity, and the noise level is further reduced. When such iron nitride magnetic powder is used together with a fatty acid when preparing a magnetic coating material, the dispersibility is improved and the noise level is further reduced. Furthermore, since it has better corrosion resistance than conventional metallic iron magnetic powder, a magnetic recording medium with good corrosion resistance can be obtained. The magnetic recording medium of the present invention may be manufactured according to a conventional method. For example, iron nitride magnetic powder having a specific surface area of 35 m 2 /g or more and a coercive force of 1300 oersted or more by the BET method is mixed with a binder resin. , an organic solvent, etc. to prepare a magnetic paint, and this magnetic paint is applied onto a substrate such as a polyester film by any means such as spraying or roll coating, and then dried. As the binder resin used here, conventionally widely used binder resins such as vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers, polyvinyl butyral resins, cellulose resins, polyurethane resins, and isocyanate compounds are widely used. In addition, examples of organic solvents include methyl isobutyl ketone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone,
Toluene, ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, dimethylformamide, etc. are used alone or in combination of two or more. Next, embodiments of the invention will be described. Example 1 Aqueous sodium hydroxide solution with a concentration of 5 mol/1.5

After treatment by blowing carbon dioxide gas at a rate of 1/2 minute, the sample was washed with water and dried. 100 g of the treated powder was spread uniformly on a quartz board, placed in a tubular electric furnace, hydrogen gas was passed through at a rate of 20/min, and the mixture was heated and reduced at 400°C. After the reduction was completed, it was immersed in toluene to prevent ignition in the air and then taken out to obtain a metallic iron magnetic powder containing nickel and silicon. Next, the obtained metallic iron magnetic powder was heat-treated at a temperature of 450° C. in a mixed gas flow of ammonia and hydrogen to obtain iron nitride magnetic powder containing nickel and silicon. The obtained iron nitride magnetic powder is an acicular magnetic powder with a particle size (major axis) of 0.2μ and an axial ratio (major axis/minor axis) of 10, a coercive force of 1470 oersted, a saturation magnetization of 112 emu/g, and a BET method. A silicon-containing metallic iron powder was prepared in the same manner as in Example 1, except that the α-iron oxyhydroxide powder thus obtained was used in the same amount as in Example 1 instead of the nickel-containing α-iron oxyhydroxide. Furthermore, iron nitride magnetic powder containing silicon was obtained. The obtained iron nitride magnetic powder has a particle size (long axis) of 0.25μ and an axial ratio (long axis/

ことがわかる。[Table] As is clear from the above table, the magnetic tapes obtained by this invention (Examples 1 to 3) all have a higher maximum output level at a recording wavelength of 1μ than the conventional magnetic tape (Comparative example). This indicates that the magnetic recording medium obtained by the present invention has a low noise level and is suitable for high-density recording. Furthermore, the magnetic tapes obtained in each example showed a smaller decrease in maximum magnetic flux density than the magnetic tapes obtained in the comparative examples, which indicates that the magnetic recording medium obtained by the present invention also has improved corrosion resistance. I understand that.
