The technique of tanning leather has existed for a long time. Since ancient times, humans have been processing animal fur into supple clothing suitable for wearing. This process includes not only mechanical and scientific procedures to remove blood, lymph, adhering pieces of flesh and body hair from the rawhide, but also oxygen and sterilization to make the rawhide soft and supple. These are processed while still wet. Generally, the skin is dyed and treated with oil and fat to make it smooth, soft, strong, and water resistant. Dyed and fat-soaked hides contain 45-60% water and are usually dried to a moisture content of 14%. During this drying process, the skin undergoes chemical and physical reactions. That is, loose tannins, dyes, and oils are spread evenly, penetrate deeply, and become firmly fixed. On the other hand, if drying is uneven, tannins, dyes, and oils will float on the skin surface without being fixed.
This can cause ugly dark stains and uneven appearance.

A common industrial technique for drying wet rawhide is usually referred to as ``sizing drying''. As the name suggests, the hair-free, bumpy side of the rawhide is glued to a large, flat plate made of glass, ceramic, or metal coated with adhesive, which then passes through a dryer tunnel. Once dried to a predetermined moisture content, the rawhide is peeled off, leaving most of it with a flat, smooth surface that can be immediately finished and processed into a variety of leather products. Alternatively, the wet rawhide may be similarly spread on a flat, smooth polished plate and then vacuum dried. Although this vacuum drying takes less time than drying with glue, it requires expensive equipment.

Whether drying with glue or vacuum drying, it is essential that the wet rawhide adheres tightly to a smooth surface without creating a single bubble. The wet rawhide is applied to the plate surface and smoothed manually with a rubber roller type slicker. A blade with a flat edge is most commonly used here to gently process the wet rawhide surface from center to edge without creating air bubbles or blisters between the rawhide and the plate surface. . At the same time, the rawhide is stretched to expand its area. This is bone-breaking work that requires great strength and sustained force. It's no wonder that towards the end of the day's work, fatigue increases and productivity decreases.

Broadly speaking, the present invention relates to a leather tanning apparatus for flattening and stretching wet rawhide on a smooth surface for drying. The device is placed in close proximity to a smooth, flat plate to which the rawhide is applied for drying in accordance with conventional tanning processes. The device consists of a support device for supporting a slicker member placed in close proximity to the rawhide transport plate. The slicker member has a smooth, flat edge that is rotatable in a plane parallel to the surface of the plate.
The slicker member support device is configured to extend the support device in a plane parallel to and remote from the surface of the rawhide transport plate over an area substantially coextensive with the area of the rawhide supported on said plate. Partner with transport equipment to move. The pressing device moves the slicker member into and out of contact with the moist rawhide being conveyed onto the rawhide conveying plate on a path perpendicular to the same plate, and cooperates with the slicker member to exert a force on the slicker member. work A spaced manual control is provided for actuating a drive which causes the slicker member to be manipulated over the surface of the rawhide as if manually handling the rawhide.

11 and 13 illustrate the relationship between the components of the control system illustrated in FIGS. 8-10 and the components of some of the machines that actuate the slicker member 75. FIGS. Therein, in particular, a device is shown for transmitting the motion caused by the actuation of the handle 85 to the responsive mechanical component. In the hydraulic circuit illustrated in FIG. 11, a motor-driven hydraulic pump provides the pressure or flow source for the X, Y and servo valve input ports. When a current flows through a servovalve from the electrical control circuit shown in FIG. It will respond proportionately. As will be described in detail later, the direction is determined by the direction in which the handle 85 moves.

When the valve spool moves, the circuit motor 32,
Hydraulic pressure and flow to the actuator in 54 or 63 occurs. The actuator then moves in proportion to the movement of the spool. That is, the spools are sequentially connected to the corresponding servo valve current coils (103, 103,
104 or 107). When control current flows backwards through the control coil, the valve spool moves in the opposite direction, causing the actuator to move in the opposite direction as well. A cross relief valve 100, shown in FIG. 11A, is included in each actuator circuit. This valve is a variable pressure safety device to control the momentum as needed when the actuator is stopped.

FIG. 12 shows the electrical control circuit. X
and a Y-bridge (voltage dividers 101 and 102 are each installed in a component of the control device) are both systems that control the rate of current. Because the voltage divider wiper is located at the center of its movable range,
The current flows through the associated servo valve current coil (103
or 104). When the wiper is moved from its center point in response to movement of the parallel mounted handle 85, current flows in one direction through the current coil of the solenoid valve depending on the direction of the handle movement. The farther the wiper position is from its center point, the more current will flow. Reversing the movement of the wiper away from the center point on the voltage divider reverses the flow of current through the servovalve's current coil, again causing the wiper to move away from the center point on the voltage divider. The more it moves, the more current flows.

Z direction control is a closed loop servo circuit. The voltage divider 105 on the control handle is the master, and the voltage divider 106 on the Z actuator motor 63 is the slave. When the wiper position of the secondary voltage divider does not match that of the primary voltage divider, the inherent current in current coil 107 moves the servovalve.
This is to move the Z actuator 63 and the wiper of the slave voltage divider to the position of the slave voltage divider in coincidence with the position of the main voltage divider. When the Z actuator is driven, the slicker member 75 will also move accordingly.

FIG. 13 shows the pneumatic circuit that produces the pressing force exerted on the slicker member. When the pressurized air is filtered, the pressure becomes regular and smooth before entering the air solenoid valve.
In normal operation, air is drawn from the solenoid valve to each air cylinder 73, 74 while keeping the slicker member 75 in its most retracted position.
flows to the rod end. When switch 97 on handle 85 is depressed, current flows through coil 108, actuating the air solenoid valve. This directs air to the end of the piston of each air cylinder to advance the slicker member toward the rawhide 22. The pneumatic regulator is adjusted to apply a desired load to the slicker member against the rawhide. The extent to which the slicker members advance in and out can be adjusted by a variable electrical control.

Pivot axes 89 and 90 in Y direction movement
As upper frame 88 rotates with respect to frame 91, gear 109 rotates. Gear 109 meshes with a small gear 110 mounted on Y voltage divider shaft 111, moving the voltage divider wiper in proportion to the movement of frame 88. Springs 112 and 113 keep skewed frames 88 and 91 parallel and in a neutral position that places the wiper of voltage divider 102 at its center point.
