A light source having an emission wavelength effective for obtaining the photoelectric effect of the emitter material is arranged on the surface of the driver unit to be mounted, and the light emitted from this light source is guided into the discharge cell to flicker in a dark environment. The present invention relates to a technique capable of obtaining a good display effect without causing a problem.

That is, h is a Planck's constant, r is a frequency, q is a positive value, and φ is a work function. Therefore, the smaller the work function φ, the higher the discharge energy can be obtained.

When, for example, scanning drive is performed for a voltage application time of about 100 μsec, a discharge delay occurs because the photoelectric effect cannot be obtained, and the discharge time becomes shorter than the voltage application time, causing a so-called flicker phenomenon. However, there is a problem that a good display effect cannot be obtained.

A gas discharge display device mounted on a unit, wherein the cathode is formed of an emitter material, and is shorter than a limit wavelength that produces a photoelectric effect corresponding to the work function of the emitter material on the driver unit surface. A light-transmitting portion having a high transmittance for the irradiation light from the light source means is formed on at least a part of the insulating substrate, and the irradiation light is discharged through the light-transmitting portion. The point is that it is guided into the cell.

And, since this light has an emission wavelength shorter than the critical wavelength that produces a photoelectric effect corresponding to the work function of the emitter material that constitutes the cathode,
Electrons can be emitted from the emitter material, and the presence of these electrons shortens the discharge delay time. for that reason,
Flicker during scanning discharge can be prevented, and a high display effect can be obtained.

The fluorescent substance provided in the above is excited to emit light, and the emitter substance receiving this light emits electrons. Since the afterglow time due to the fluorescent substance is longer than the ion disappearance time after discharge, these electrons remain even at the start of the next discharge, further shortening the discharge delay time. Therefore, it is possible to more reliably prevent flickering during scanning discharge.

In the molten state, the cathode 4 is formed by adhering it to a thickness of 20 to 30 μm. Such LaB 6 originally has a high melting point of about 2600 ° C., but can be completely melted by a plasma spraying technique in a high temperature environment of several thousand to tens of thousands of degrees in a plasma jet. Further, as shown in FIG. 1, in the vicinity of the end portion in the longitudinal direction of the driver unit 12, an ultraviolet ray emitting lamp 15 as a light source means for emitting an ultraviolet ray having a wavelength of 360 nm.

Therefore, when the cathode 4 is irradiated with the light through the light transmitting portion 1a using the ultraviolet radiation lamp 15 having an emission wavelength of 360 nm, which is a shorter wavelength than this, one cycle between the cathode and the anode is obtained. Even if the ions are lost due to the discharge of 1, the electrons emitted by the photoelectric effect still exist at the start of the discharge in the next cycle. Therefore, the electrons can shorten the discharge delay time and prevent the so-called flicker phenomenon, which is a drawback peculiar to the gas discharge display device including the gas discharge display panel using the emitter material.

A gas discharge display device rated at 250 V using No. 6 as a cathode material was driven by applying a voltage of 200 V, and then the ambient brightness was reduced to about 50 lux to forcibly cause a flicker phenomenon. In addition to the ultraviolet radiation lamp 15 having an emission wavelength of 360 nm described above, a 450 nm (blue fluorescent lamp) blue fluorescent lamp and a 600 nm red fluorescent lamp are prepared, and these are used as light sources A, B, and C. The light source was moved to a position gradually separated from the gas discharge display panel, and the flicker phenomenon was observed.

き、高い表示効果を得ることができる。According to the second embodiment, in addition to the electron emission from the emitter material by the ultraviolet radiation lamp 15 described in the first embodiment, the ultraviolet rays from the discharge gas in the discharge cell 9 and the ultraviolet radiation from the ultraviolet radiation lamp 15 are used. , The fluorescent substance mixed in the barrier 3 is excited to emit light, and the emitter substance receiving this light emits electrons. Since the afterglow time due to the fluorescent substance is longer than the ion disappearance time after discharge, a large amount of these electrons are present at the start of the next discharge, and the discharge delay time is shortened. Therefore, flicker can be surely prevented, and a high display effect can be obtained.

Since this light has an emission wavelength shorter than the critical wavelength that produces a photoelectric effect corresponding to the work function of the emitter material that constitutes the cathode, electrons can be emitted from the emitter material, and the existence of this electron causes discharge. The delay time becomes shorter. Therefore, flicker during scanning discharge can be prevented, and a high display effect can be obtained.

Therefore, the discharge delay time is further shortened, flicker during scanning discharge can be reliably prevented, and the display effect can be further improved.
