Abstract

(57)【要約】 【目的】ボールに対する打点がずれたときに、ゴルフク
ラブヘッドがその重心を通る垂直軸回りの回転を抑制す
る。 【構成】 ステンレススチールのような適当な金属から
形成されたゴルフクラブヘッド１０であり、中空の本体
１２と、ホーゼル１４とを有する。中空の本体１２は上
壁１６と、底壁１８と、側壁２０と、ゴルフボールに当
たる部分であるフェース２４を備えた前壁２２とを有す
る。中空の本体１２は、フェース上でゴルフボールを中
心からずれたポイントで打ったときにゴルフクラブヘッ
ド１０の回転あるいは捻れに対する抵抗力を大きくする
ウェイトパッド３８を有する。ウェイトパッド３８の重
量は５グラムから１５グラムであり、本体のヒール部内
に配置されている。ウェイトパッド３８は本体の側壁２
０の長手方向に沿って延びる細長い形状を有する。

Description

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【産業上の利用分野】この発明はゴルフクラブに関す
る。さらに詳しくは、この発明はゴルフボールを中心を
外して打ったときにゴルフクラブヘッドが回転したり捻
れたりすることに対する抵抗力を大きくするためのウェ
イトパッドを備えたゴルフクラブヘッドに関する。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】従来から“ウッド”として知られるゴル
フクラブは、細長いシャフトの一端へ取付けられている
楓や柿などの適当な木から形成されたヘッドを有する。
これらウッドすなわち木製のクラブヘッドは通常、中が
詰まっており、最大限の性能を引き出すためにヘッドの
重心のまわりに重量が適切に配置されるような形状に形
成されている。ゴルフクラブ“ウッド”のヘッドはステ
ンレススチールのような適当なメタルすなわち金属から
も形成される。メタルウッドは通常、中空である。メタ
ルヘッドにおいて性能を最大限に引き出すために、ヘッ
ドの重心に対する重量分布の配置に関して様々な試みが
なされている。こうした試みとして、メタルヘッド内部
の様々な位置に様々なタイプの異なる数のウェイト部材
(weight member) を設置する方法がある。こうした試み
の例がパーマ(Palmer)の米国特許第1,167,106号、スコ
ット(Scott) の米国特許第 1,526,438号、リンク(Link)
の米国特許第 1,582,836号、イガラシ(Igarashi)の米国
特許第 5,058,895号、アントニアス(Antonious) の米国
特許第5,141,230 号に開示されている。パーマとスコッ
トとリンクの特許においては、ウェイト部材はクラブヘ
ッドの重心の真後ろに配置されている。イガラシとアン
トニアスの特許ではウェイト部材はクラブヘッドのヒー
ルとトウの部分に配置されている。

【課題を解決するための手段】この発明は重心を有する
ゴルフクラブヘッドを提供している。このゴルフクラブ
ヘッドは中空の本体を有する。本体はヒール部と、トウ
部と、上壁と、底壁と、上壁と底壁との間に設けられた
側壁と、ゴルフボールに当たる部分であるフェースを備
えた前壁とを有する。このゴルフクラブヘッドはまた、
細長いシャフトの一端を受容するためのホーゼルも有す
る。フェースは重心と位置が揃えられたスイートスポッ
トをその上に有していて、ゴルフボールをスイートスポ
ットで打ったときにはクラブヘッドは回転しないように
なっている。フェースは細長いシャフトの長手軸を含む
第１の垂直面よりも前方に、第１の垂直面に対して斜め
に配置されている。フェースは重心を含む第２の垂直面
と交差しておりこれとほぼ垂直に配置されている。第２
の垂直面によって本体はヒール部とトウ部に分割されて
いる。第１の垂直面の後方の、ホーゼルと第２の垂直面
との中間には、本体のヒール部内の側壁に沿ってウェイ
トパッドが設けられている。

【作用】この構成によると、ウェイトパッドがクラブヘ
ッドがフェース上のスイートスポットから横方向にずれ
たポイントでゴルフボールを打ったときに、ゴルフクラ
ブヘッドが重心を通って延びる垂直軸のまわりで水平方
向に回転しないようにさせるための抵抗力を大きくす
る。
【０００５】ゴルフクラブヘッドの実施例において、本
体の側壁は前壁とホーゼルとの間を延びる長さを有し、
ウェイトパッドは側壁の長手方向に延びる細長い形状を
有する。ウェイトパッドは５グラムから１５グラムの重
量を有する。ウェトパッドは第１及び第２の垂直面と約
４５゜で交わる第３の垂直面によって二つのほぼ等しい
部材に分割されている。第１及び第２及び第３の垂直面
は共通の軸において交差している。
【０００６】
【実施例】以下、添付図面に基づいてこの発明の実施例
を説明する。まず図１を参照する。ゴルフクラブヘッド
１０は中空の本体１２と、ステンレススチールのような
適当なメタルから形成されたホーゼル１４とを有する。
本体１２はヒール部１２ａと、トウ部１２ｂと、上壁１
６と、底壁１８と、上壁１６と底壁１８との間に設けら
れた側壁２０と、ゴルフボールの当たる部分であるフェ
ース２４を備えた前壁２２とを有する。側壁２０はホー
ゼル１４と前壁２２との間を延びる長さを有する（図２
参照）。フェース２４上には“スイートスポット２６”
として知られる一般に中点が配置されている。スイート
スポットはクラブヘッドの重心２８と位置が揃ってい
る。フェース２４がゴルフボールをスイートスポット２
６で打ったときにはゴルフクラブヘッド１０は回転した
り捻れたりすることはない。細長いシャフト３０の一端
はホーゼル１４に受容されている。
【０００７】クラブヘッドのフェース２４はシャフト３
０の長手軸３２を含む第１の垂直面Ａの前方において第
１の垂直面に対して斜めに配置されている。フェース２
４はスイートスポット２６と重心２８を含む第２の垂直
面Ｂと交差しておりこれとほぼ直角である。本体１２は
垂直面Ｂによってヒール部１２ａとトウ部１２ｂに分割
されている。
【０００８】本体１２は一般に涙状の形状を有してい
て、その重量の大部分はトウ部１２ｂに配置されてお
り、ヒール部１２ａには重量のほんの一部しか配置され
ていない。本体１２が涙状の形状を有することで、クラ
ブヘッドはゴルファがダウンスイングするときの空気力
学特性が非常に好ましいものになる。スイートスポット
２６から横方向にずれた、フェース２４上の中心からず
れた（ポイント３４、３６のような）ポイントでゴルフ
ボールを打つと、本体１２のトウ部１２ｂに大きな重量
が配置されているために、ゴルフクラブヘッド１０の重
心２８を通る垂直軸のまわりでの（図１において時計方
向あるいは反時計方向への）水平方向の回転、あるいは
捻れが大きくなる。例えば、中心からずれたポイント３
４で打つと、クラブヘッドが水平方向に回転することに
よってフェース２４はクローズ(close) になり、ゴルフ
ボールにはフェードタイプのスピンがかかる。中心から
ずれたポイント３６で打つと、クラブヘッドの水平方向
の回転あるいは捻れによってフェース２４はオープンに
なり、ゴルフボールにはフックタイプのスピンがかか
る。
【０００９】ウェイト部材を適切に配置することによっ
て、ゴルフクラブヘッド１０は中心からずれてゴルフボ
ールを打ったときの水平方向の回転あるいは捻れに対す
る抵抗力が大きくなることがわかっている。ゴルフクラ
ブヘッド１０の水平方向の回転あるいは捻れに対するこ
の抵抗力の増大の結果、フェース２４上の中心からずれ
たポイントで打たれたゴルフボールはフェードタイプの
スピンやフックタイプのスピンがかかりにくくなる。従
って、本体１２のヒール部１２ａに本体の側壁２０の内
側に沿ってウェイトパッド３８が形成されている。ウェ
イトパッド３８は第１の垂直面Ａの後方、ホーゼル１４
と第２の垂直面Ｂとの中間に配置されている。重量が５
グラムから１５グラムであることが好ましいウェイトパ
ッド３８は、第３の垂直面Ｃによって二つのほぼ等しい
部材に分割されている。第３の垂直面Ｃは他の垂直面
Ａ、Ｂと約４５゜の角度で交差している。第１及び第２
及び第３の垂直面Ａ、Ｂ、Ｃは共通の軸Ｄで交わってい
る。
【００１０】ゴルフクラブヘッド１０のテストを行った
ときに、ウェイトパッド３８を側壁２０の長手方向に沿
って本体１２の内側の異なる三つの箇所に配置した。ウ
ェイトパッド３８の第１のテスト箇所は本体のトウ部１
２ｂ内の側壁２０に沿ったところであった。この第１の
テスト箇所では、中心からずれてゴルフボールに当たる
とクラブヘッドのフェース２４はよりオープンになった
りクローズになったりし、フェードタイプのスピンやフ
ックタイプのスピンがより強くかかった。言い換えれ
ば、ウェイトパッド３８をトウ部１２ｂに配置したとき
には、ゴルフボールは所望の飛行経路からよりずれるよ
うになった。ウェイトパッド３８の第２のテスト箇所は
スイートスポット２６及び重心２８の真後ろであった。
この第２のテスト箇所は、ゴルフボールのフェードタイ
プのスピンやフックタイプのスピンになんら影響を与え
なかった。すなわち、ウェイトパッド３８を重心の真後
ろに配置すると、ゴルフボールはゴルフクラブヘッド１
０からウェイトパッド３８をなくしてしまったときと同
じ経路を飛行した。ウェイトパッド３８の第３のテスト
箇所は本体のヒール部１２ａ内の側壁２０に沿ったとこ
ろであった。この第３のテスト箇所においては、ゴルフ
ボールを中心からずれて打ったときにフェース２４がオ
ープンになったりクローズになったりしにくくなり、フ
ェードスピンやフックスピンがかかりにくかった。従っ
て、ウェイトパッド３８を図１〜図３に示されているよ
うに配置するとゴルフボールは所望の飛行経路のより近
くを飛行することになる。
【００１１】上壁１６、底壁１８、側壁２０の各々は
０．０３６インチ(0.914mm) から０．０４０インチ(1.0
2mm)の間の厚みを有する。前壁２２は０．１２８インチ
(3.25mm)から０．１３５インチ(3.43mm)の間の厚みを有
する。
【００１２】上述した実施例は単に説明のためのもので
あり、発明を制限することはない。従って、この発明は
その精神及び範囲から逸脱しない限り如何なる形によっ
ても実現が可能である。

Claims (9)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 重心を有するゴルフクラブヘッドであっ
    て、 ヒール部と、トウ部と、上壁と、底壁と、前記上壁と底
    壁との間に設けられた側壁と、ゴルフボールに当たる部
    分であるフェースを備えた前壁とを有する中空の本体
    と、 細長いシャフトの一端を受容するためのホーゼルと、 ウェイトパッドと、を有し、 前記フェースがスイートスポットを有し、このスイート
    スポットが、ゴルフボールが前記スイートスポットで打
    たれたときにクラブヘッドの回転が生じないように、重
    心と位置を揃えて配置されており、前記フェースが細長
    いシャフトの長手軸を含む第１の垂直面の前方において
    第１の垂直面に対して斜めに配置され、前記フェースが
    重心を含む第２の垂直面とほぼ直角に交差し、前記第２
    の垂直面が前記本体を前記ヒール部とトウ部とに分割し
    ており、 前記ウェイトパッドが前記第１の垂直面の後方、前記ホ
    ーゼルと前記第２の垂直面との中間において前記本体の
    ヒール部内の前記側壁に沿って配置されており、前記ウ
    ェイトパッドが、クラブヘッドがフェース上でスイート
    スポットから横方向に中心からずれたポイントでゴルフ
    ボールを打ったときにゴルフクラブヘッドが重心を通る
    垂直軸のまわりで水平方向に回転しにくくさせているゴ
    ルフクラブヘッド。
  2. 【請求項２】 前記ウェイトパッドが５グラムから１５
    グラムの間の重量を有する請求項１記載のゴルフクラブ
    ヘッド。
  3. 【請求項３】 前記中空の本体が金属から形成されてい
    る請求項１記載のゴルフクラブヘッド。
  4. 【請求項４】 前記中空の本体がステンレススチールか
    ら形成されている請求項３記載のゴルフクラブヘッド。
  5. 【請求項５】 前記ウェイトパッドが本体のヒール部の
    みに配置されている単一のウェイトからなる請求項１記
    載のゴルフクラブヘッド。
  6. 【請求項６】 前記側壁が前記前壁と前記ホーゼルの間
    を延びる長さを有し、前記ウェイトパッドが前記側壁の
    長手方向に延びる細長い形状を有する請求項５記載のゴ
    ルフクラブヘッド。
  7. 【請求項７】 前記ウェイトパッドが、第１及び第２の
    垂直面と約４５゜で交差する第３の垂直面によってほぼ
    等しい二つの部材に分割される請求項６記載のゴルフク
    ラブヘッド。
  8. 【請求項８】 前記第１及び第２及び第３の垂直面が共
    通の軸で交わっている請求項６記載のゴルフクラブヘッ
    ド。
  9. 【請求項９】 前記上壁と底壁と側壁の各々が０．０３
    ６インチ(0.914mm)から０．０４０インチ(1.02mm)の間
    の厚みを有し、前記前壁が０．１２８インチ(3.25mm)か
    ら０．１３５インチ(3.43mm)の間の厚みを有する請求項
    １記載のゴルフクラブヘッド。
