The MR head uses the magnetoresistive effect that the electric resistance changes depending on the magnetization, and by its nature,
Providing shield layers on both sides to block unnecessary magnetic fields,
It is configured by providing an MR element and an MR lead with a gap insulating layer interposed therebetween.

At the time of this patterning, not only the MR film but also the lower gap insulating layer 52 thereunder is removed in a portion other than the MR element region. For example, the film thickness is 0.2
The lower gap insulating layer 52 having a thickness of about 5 μm is cut to a thickness of about 0.1 μm. Therefore, the film thickness of the portion 52a of the lower gap insulating layer 52 different from the MR element pattern becomes extremely thin, and the lower gap insulating layer 52 is formed.
When the film thickness is thinned, there arises a problem that the lead 56 and the lower shield layer 50 are short-circuited or a current is leaked and the head characteristics are significantly deteriorated.

It is necessary to keep the value below a little smaller value, and this magnetization reversal distance becomes several thousand Å in high density recording.
If the film thickness of the MR element 51 is about 2000 Å, the lower gap insulating layer 52 is required to have a film thickness of about 0.1 μm, which is a more serious problem.

ることができる。As described in detail above, according to the present invention, an insulating film is formed on the MR element and on the lower gap insulating layer except the contact hole region, and the contact film is formed on the insulating film via the contact hole. Since the leads that are electrically connected to the MR element are formed, the insulation between the leads and the lower shield layer can be sufficiently maintained even if the film thickness of the lower gap insulating layer is reduced to improve the resolution of the head. As a result, a thin film magnetic head having a high breakdown voltage and excellent resolution can be obtained.
