However, if silicon nitride ceramics can be used in combination with other metallic materials having excellent properties in various forms, the range of application of silicon nitride ceramics will be further expanded.

Joining, metallizing, etc. are known. Among them, metallizing is a method of forming a metal layer on the surface of ceramics, which makes it possible to impart a physical or chemical function of metal to the surface of ceramics. Furthermore, it is also an effective method as a pretreatment method when mechanically joining ceramics and metal materials.

However, the adhesion strength to the surface of the silicon nitride ceramics is extremely low, and the metal layer is merely placed on the surface of the ceramics. In particular, in pure silicon nitride ceramics containing no sintering aid or the like, the above-mentioned adhesion strength becomes even smaller.

In this method, the metal to be reacted is mainly provided in the form of powder and applied through a medium such as an organic solvent. However, the metallizing layer of the above method is about 10 μm when formed.
A moderate thickness is desirable, and a thicker thickness sometimes results in cracking in the silicon nitride. Therefore, it is an important factor to accurately and thinly apply the metal powder to be reacted, but it has been difficult to uniformly and thinly apply a large area. Especially, when the silicon nitride body to be metallized is not a quadratic plane but a three-dimensional object, it is very difficult.

As a result, the metal powder is sprinkled on the adhesive slightly formed on the surface of silicon nitride, and the surplus metal powder is mechanically blown off, for example, by using a high-speed gas flow, or vibrated and dropped. It has been found that the necessary minimum amount of metal powder can be placed by removing it with a foil or the like.

The entire silicon ceramics is subjected to heat treatment under vacuum, the surface of the silicon nitride ceramics is dissociated into nitrogen and silicon, and the reaction product of silicon and the metal or alloy generated by the dissociation on the surface of the silicon nitride ceramics. And a step of forming.

The metal or alloy itself does not melt, but the reaction product with the silicon that is dissociated and formed on the surface becomes a molten state, which wets the surface of the silicon nitride ceramics and thus firmly adheres to the surface. The obtained metallized layer exhibits good physical, electrical and chemical properties.

Therefore, dissociation of the surface of the silicon nitride ceramics is hindered and alloying between silicon and the metal does not proceed. As a result, wetting of the surface of the ceramics does not occur.

First, an organic pressure-sensitive adhesive is applied to the surface of the above-mentioned silicon nitride ceramics, and the above-mentioned metal or alloy powder is placed thereon. The organic pressure-sensitive adhesive may be one that decomposes or sublimes at high temperature, and examples thereof include acrylic rubber and butadiene rubber. It is also possible that the decomposition at high temperature is insufficient and some carbon remains.

By doing so, the heating temperature can be set low. This is because the temperature at which silicon nitride on the surface of silicon nitride ceramics dissociates into silicon and nitrogen (dissociation temperature) depends not only on the heating temperature but also on the pressure in the furnace.

The temperature of the entire ceramic is raised to a maximum heating temperature described below at a temperature rate, and heating and holding is performed at this temperature for a predetermined time.

On the contrary, when the heating temperature is equal to or higher than the melting point of the metal, the metal itself becomes in a molten state, which inhibits dissociation on the surface of the silicon nitride ceramics.
