In particular, the track crossing pulse generating circuit required to detect the position of the servo head is composed of many analog elements, making it difficult to miniaturize the circuit.
It requires a relatively large mounting area compared to other circuits.
Therefore, this track crossing pulse generating circuit is a major obstacle to reducing the size of the entire magnetic disk drive.

II. Explanation of Each Calculated Value in the Circuit Using Figure 3, we will explain each calculated value necessary to explain the operation of the circuit. Figure 3 is a diagram explaining each calculated value of the head positioning control circuit of this embodiment. Note that in Figure 3, each calculated value is shown as a continuous analog signal for convenience, but in reality it is a digital value converted to digital at predetermined time intervals or a digital value calculated by the DSP 50. However, PosN and PosQ are analog signals.

The zone number is a number assigned consecutively in units of four tracks. For example, if the number of tracks is 2048,
Zone numbers are assigned from 0 to 511. The reason why zone numbers are assigned in units of four tracks is that the position signals PosN and PosQ are signals obtained with four tracks as one cycle. (Step S10) The DSP 50 performs the process described below at intervals of 38 μs set in the interrupt timer 56. Note that the DSP 50 continues to operate for a period from the end of this interrupt process until the start of the next interrupt process.
P50 performs processes such as determining whether the calculated head speed and head position satisfy the conditions for switching from speed control to position control, or determining whether a command has been received from the main control unit 40.

The set value of 38 μs for the interrupt timer 56 is set so that one interrupt processing time in this embodiment is completed in a time shorter than 38 μs, and processing other than the interrupt processing can be performed sufficiently. Also, although the detailed reason will be described later, when the predicted absolute position EstLPos of the servo head is corrected based on the measured position RRPos within the zone to calculate the actual absolute position LPos, this predicted absolute position
If the predicted error between EstLPos and the actual absolute position of the servo head (not the calculated real absolute position LPos) is not within ±2 tracks, the value of the calculated real absolute position LPos is not guaranteed, so the interrupt timer 56 is set so that the predicted error is always within ±2 tracks.

The part of LPos corresponding to the zone number is extracted and stored in the working variable Work. First, in step S30, 0.5 is added to the predicted absolute position EstLPos and stored in the working variable Work. This is because the starting point for assigning zone numbers is shifted by 0.5 tracks from the starting point of the absolute position, and the quotient of 4 of the absolute position does not simply become the zone number; the quotient of 4 obtained by adding 0.5 to the absolute position becomes the accurate zone number. Next, in step S31, the digits less than 4 tracks of the working variable Work are cleared to zero. At this point, the variable Work

The actual absolute position LPos is calculated by correcting the actual position LPos using the actual position RRPos in the zone.
It is necessary to assume that the error between Pos and the actual position is within ±2.0 tracks. This is because the actual position RRPos in the measured zone is

The value 0 is set because the position within the zone can be determined from the measured position within the zone RRPos, but it is not possible to determine which zone the vehicle is located in.

The zone number of the predicted overall position EstLPos can be either the same as the one in the predicted overall position EstLPos, or moved up or moved down. This determination is made by comparing the predicted in-zone position ERPos and the actual in-zone position RRP
The determination is made based on the magnitude of the position error Distance, which is the difference from os, and processing described below is performed depending on the determination result.

(Step S36) At this point, the zone number of the actual position is stored in the work variable Work. The actual absolute position LPos of the servo head is calculated by adding the measured in-zone position RRPos to this work variable Work.

(Steps S37 to S40) In steps S37 to S40, the DSP 50 performs processing to remove noise from the analog signals before converting the position signals PosN and PosQ into digital signals, thereby improving the stability of servo control. First, in step S37, the real absolute position L

Next, if the value of the variable Work, which is the position error, is greater than 1.5 or less than -1.5, the DSP 50 determines that noise is present in the servo signal that is the basis of the in-zone actual measured position RRPos, which is the actual measured value. In this case, in step S40, the DSP 50 uses the predicted absolute position EstLPos itself as the actual absolute position LPos, and does not use it as the actual absolute position LPos calculated based on the in-zone actual measured position RRPos.

On the other hand, if the value of the variable Work, which is the position error, is other than the above, the actual measured value of the in-zone actual position RRPos is determined to be accurate, and the actual absolute position LPos calculated from the in-zone actual position RRPos is used as is. Note that if the position error is greater than 1.5 or less than -1.5, the DSP 50 determines that noise is present in the servo signal, but it does not have to be limited to 1.5.

(Step S42) In preparation for the next interrupt process, the DSP 50 calculates the next predicted absolute position EstLPos of the servo head. In this embodiment, this predicted absolute position EstLPos is calculated by adding the head movement amount DiffLPos to the current actual absolute position LPos. This is the simplest calculation method, and assuming that the servo head movement speed does not change, since the interrupt time is a constant interval, the next predicted absolute position EstLPos of the servo head can be calculated simply by adding the calculated servo head movement amount DiffLPos to the actual absolute position LPos of the servo head.

Furthermore, the interrupt time does not need to be limited to a fixed interval, and the predicted position of the servo head in the next interrupt process may be calculated from the servo head movement speed and the time until the next interrupt process. (Step S50) The DSP 50 determines whether to perform speed control or position control. Specifically, the current servo control state is set in the variable TaskNo, and by referencing the value of the variable TaskNo, it determines whether to perform speed control or position control.
The setting of this variable TaskNo is performed by the DSP 50 during background processing other than interrupt processing, or in step S67, which will be described later.

(Step S51) When it is determined in step S50 that speed control should be performed, the DSP 50 performs calculations related to speed control in steps S51 to S54. First, in step S51, the position error DiffL
Pos is subjected to low-pass filtering, and head velocity Velocity
y is calculated. Low-pass filtering is performed by digital calculations to remove high-frequency components. In other words, while it is possible to use the position error DiffLPos as is as the head speed, there is a risk that the high-frequency components will make servo control unstable. Therefore, by applying low-pass filtering to the position error DiffLPos, the high-frequency components are removed and servo control is stabilized.

In reality, after power is turned on, the head positioning control circuit performs re-zero control to position the servo head on the track with track number 0.
The speed control is the same as that shown in the flowchart in Fig. 1. However, in the re-zero control, the speed is not controlled according to the number of tracks up to the track with track number 0, but is simply controlled at a constant speed. In this re-zero control, the absolute position of the servo head is unknown to the DSP 50, and only a provisional position is known, assuming one of the tracks to be zero. When the re-zero control is completed, the servo head is positioned on the track with track number 0, and the absolute position of the servo head can be determined by setting the absolute position of the servo head to zero at that point.

Therefore, the DSP50 of the head positioning control circuit must determine the moving speed Velocity of the servo head before entering this re-zero control. Once the moving speed Velocity of the servo head is determined, the DSP50 can perform speed control in the re-zero control by processing similar to that shown in the flowchart in Figure 5. During this re-zero control, the servo head is simply controlled at a constant speed, and after the servo head crosses track number 0, it detects a guard band in which a predetermined servo pattern is recorded, decelerates the head, and drives it at a low speed in the reverse direction, positioning the servo head on track number 0. Thereafter,
The actual absolute position LPos, predicted absolute position EstLPos, and previous absolute position LastLPos of the head calculated at that time are cleared to zero for initialization.

(Step S82) The DSP 50 sets the motor drive current value DrvCur to -100 in the register in the output port 52. Assume that the servo head is stopped, for example, in the innermost landing zone of the magnetic disk when power is turned on. The motor drive current value of -100 is a current value for driving the servo head toward the inner side, and is sufficiently smaller than the value when driving the servo head at maximum acceleration.

(Step S83) The DSP 50 waits for 100 ms. This time is measured by a timer separate from the time counter mentioned above. 100 ms is sufficient time to move the servo head to the inner side of the magnetic disk and press the actuator that moves the servo head against a mechanical stopper, preventing any further movement. Of course, if the disk drive is operating normally, the servo head will be stopped in the landing zone of the magnetic disk when the power is turned off. However, there is a possibility that the servo head will not stop in the landing zone due to some external force or abnormality, and will be positioned, for example, on the outermost side.
Therefore, 100 ms is a sufficient time for the servo head to reach the innermost side from any position.

(Step S84) The DSP 50 sets the motor drive current value DrvCur to 100 in the register in the output port 52. This motor drive current value of 100 is the current value for moving the servo head toward the outer side. In other words, after the servo head reaches the innermost side, the servo head is then moved toward the outer side.

(Step S85) The DSP 50 waits for 20 ms. As in step S83, this time is measured by a timer separate from the time counter described above. This 20 ms value is used to give the servo head a predetermined speed, after which the DSP 50 calculates the servo head movement speed by sampling the position signal. This time is set so that the servo head is positioned sufficiently in front of the outermost position.

(Step S86) The DSP 50 sets the motor drive current value DrvCur to 0 in the register in the output port 52. As a result, the motor drive current becomes zero and the motor moves by inertia. Then, in a step described later, the DSP 50 samples the position signal and calculates the movement speed of the servo head.

(Step S92) The DSP 50 increments the time counter. This time counter counts the time it takes for the position signal PosN to change from zero to zero. On the other hand, as is clear from FIG. 3, the position signal PosN changing from zero to zero indicates that the servo head has moved across two tracks.

Next, the DSP 50 calculates the actual position RRPos within the zone and sets this RRPos as the provisional position LPos of the servo head. In other words, since the absolute position of the servo head is unknown until the servo head is positioned on track number 0 by re-zero control, the actual position RRPos within the zone of the servo head at the time the velocity is calculated is assumed to be the absolute position LPos of the servo head.

Next, the DSP 50 multiplies the servo head movement speed (Velocity) calculated in step S93 by the time until the next interrupt process to calculate the servo head movement distance, and adds the servo head movement distance to the value of the tentative actual absolute position (LPos) to calculate the predicted absolute position (EstLPos) of the servo head in the next interrupt process. Note that this predicted absolute position (EstLPos) is also a tentative position.
