Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 [産業上の利用分野] 本発明は石英系光ファイバに関するものである。
[従来の技術] 一般に、石英系光ファイバは、コアにゲルマニウムGe、
リンP、チタンTi等の酸化物を添加して屈折率を上げ、
クラッドは純粋石英としたものか、又は、コアを純粋石
英としクラッドにフッ素を添加して屈折率を下げたもの
から成る。これらの石英系光ファイバにおけるガラス材
料固有の損失要因としては、レーリ散乱損失、紫外吸収
損失、赤外吸収損失があり、それぞれ強い波長依存性を
示す。従って、石英系光ファイバの低損失化には、これ
らの固有損失を低減することが課題となる。
現在のところ、石英系光ファイバが最低損失となる波長
域は、1.5μm帯であり、それより短波長側ではレーリ
散乱損失が、長波長側では赤外吸収損失が支配的要因と
なる。具体的には、主材料であるSi−O2結合は、SiO4の
分子振動の基本振動が、波長9.1μm、12.5μm、21μ
mに大きな109〜1010dB/kmの吸収をもち、その第1の吸
収スペクトルのすそ」が最低損失の1.55μmに影響を与
えて、0.02dB/kmの損失増加をもたらす。
従来、コア材を構成するドーパント材料によってガラス
化温度が異なることから、P2O5を使用すると他の材料に
比べて低温(約1400度)でガラス化するため、レーリ散
乱による損失が少ないとされる。また、赤外吸収に対し
ては、GeO2をコア材に用いるのが有利とされている。
[発明が解決しようとする問題点] しかし、赤外吸収損失の影響を低減することを目的とし
て、Geをドープすると、基本吸収帯は長波側に移動して
影響の度合は小さくなるが、レーリ散乱が増加する。ま
て、ドーパント材としてチタンTiを用いた場合には、Ti
3+、Ti4+の価数変化で、Ti3+がppbオーダで大きな吸収
帯を生じる。リンPやボロンBについては3μm付近の
吸収が増加し、Bは1.2μm付近から吸収帯の「すそ」
の影響が生じる。
本発明の目的は、屈折率をSiO2より高くでき且つ固有損
失を増加させないドーパント材料を用いた低損失の光フ
ァイバを提供することにある。
[問題点を解決するための手段] 本発明の石英系光ファイバは、ヨウ素が添加されSi−I
結合を有する石英ガラスコアと、フッ素若しくはボロン
が添加されSi−F結合若しくはSi−B結合を有する石英
ガラスクラッドとを備えていることを特徴とするもので
ある。
[作用] コアにヨウ素を含ませることにより、レーリ散乱損失を
増加させることなく、コアの屈折率を上げることがで
き、しかも赤外吸収帯を従来のドーパント材料より長波
長側に移行させることができる。このため、長波長域
(1.3μm〜1.6μm)で低損失の光ファイバが得られ
る。
[実施例] 以下図示の実施例について本発明を説明する。
本発明の石英系光ファイバは、通常の光ファイバと同じ
くコア1とクラッド2とを有する。コア1とクラッド2
間に屈折率差を0.3%程度持たせるために、ドーパント
として、コア1にはハロゲン元素のヨウ素Iを、クラッ
ド2にはフッ素Fを混入させている。コア1に添加され
ているドーパントIは、公知のGe、Ti、P、B等と同じ
く、コア1の屈折率を上げる働きがあり、フッ素Fはク
ラッド2の屈折率を下げる働きがある。従って、コア1
にヨウ素Iを添加し、クラッド2にフッ素Fを添加した
光ファイバは、容易に所望の屈折率差を得ることがで
き、I添加量を少なくして低損失化を図ることができ
る。
上記ドーパントIが屈折率が上げる働きをなす理由につ
いては、次のように考えられる。
まず、既に知られているように、周期表第VII族の同じ
ハロゲン元素(F、Cl、Br、I)でありながら、Fをド
ープした場合にはSiO2より屈折率が低下し、塩素Clをド
ープした場合には屈折率が増加する事実がある。ちなみ
にFの原子番号は“9"、Clの原子番号は“17"であり、
原子番号“14"の硅素Siの両側に位置している。一方、
屈折率は分極率と関係があり、原子半径が大きいほうが
分極率が大きくなる。従って、硅素Siを境として、これ
より原子半径の小さいフッ素Fについては屈折率を減少
させ、Siより原子半径の大きい塩素Clについては屈折率
を増加させるのであり、塩素Clより更に原子半径大きい
臭素Br,ヨウ素Iについても、屈折率を増加させるもの
であると考えられる。
次に、ヨウ素Iの働きは、上記の屈折率の増大作用だけ
に止どまらず、光ファイバを極めて低損失とする働きも
なす。
即ち、SiX4(X=F、Cl、Br、I)において、赤外吸収
帯の基本吸収を比較すると、原子量が大きくなると更に
長波長帯に移行する。例えば、ν1振動を例にとれば、
Fの基本吸収は4.6μm、Clは12.5μm、Brは40.2μ
m、Iは更に長波長になる。従って、コア1にヨウ素I
を添加し、クラッド2にフッ素Fを添加した光ファイバ
は、赤外吸収の「すそ」の影響が極めて小さくなる。
上記光ファイバを作るには、公知の母材製造方法が応用
できるものであるが、その一例として、第2図に内付CV
D法による場合を示す。
回転する石英ガラス管3の中に、四塩化硅素ガスSiCl4
及びフッ素Fを酸素ガスO2とともに送りながら、酸水素
バーナ6で加熱する。バーナ6を左右に満遍なく移動さ
せ、送り込まれた気体の反応によって、内壁全体にクラ
ッド材料となるFを含んだSiO2膜4を生成する。次に、
第2図に示すように、I2単体7を電気炉5で加熱しつ
つ、SiCl4、O2にI2を加えて、同様の作業を繰り返し、
コア材料となるIドープSiO2膜8を生成させる。最後
に、コラプス工程、線引工程を経て、光ファイバを得
る。この実施例ではI2単体を用いたが、SiI4を用いるこ
ともできる。
かくして、試作した単一モード光ファイバの比屈折率差
Δnは0.3%で、コア部(Iドープ部)のΔnはSiO2に
比べ0.05%である。
上記ファイバの伝達損失−波長特性を測定し、損失解析
を行った結果、1.5μm帯の赤外吸収損は、0.017dB/km
となった。
尚、実施例ではクラッドにFを添加したが、Bを添加し
てもよい。
[発明の効果] 本発明の石英系光ファイバは、そのコアにドーパントと
してヨウ素を適用しているため、レーリ散乱損失を増加
させることなく、コアの屈折率を上げることができ、し
かも赤外吸収帯は従来のドーパント材料により長波長側
に移行される。また、クラッドにフッ素若しくはボロン
を添加したものであるため、コアの添加量を上げること
なく容易に所望の比屈折率差がえられる。従って、長波
長域(1.3μm〜1.6μm)で低損失の光ファイバが得ら
れる。

図である。 図中、3は石英ガラス管、4はFを含んだSiO2膜、5は

SiO2膜を示す。

  1. 【請求項1】ヨウ素が添加されSi−I結合を有する石英
    ガラスコアと、フッ素若しくはボロンが添加されSi−F
    結合若しくはSi−B結合を有する石英ガラスクラッドと
    を備えていることを特徴とする石英系光ファイバ。
