Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a lithium secondary battery with an excellent charge/ discharge cycle properly by providing a film made of metal fluoride on the grain surface of a positive electrode active material. CONSTITUTION: Preferably, a grain surface is coated by LiOH by heating a mixture, in which LiNiO2 or LiCoO2 powder and LiOH powder are mixed at a solar ratio of 1:0.1, in a dry air atmosphere at a temperature of 450 deg.C for two hours. Subsequently, the grain is exposed in fluorine gas for 10 minutes, and then, a positive electrode active material provided with a LiF film on the grain surface is formed. A ratio of LiF to the active material is 10 mole %. Acetylene black serving as a conductive agent and polyvinylidene fluoride serving as a binder are added to the active material, and these are pressure- molded and heated so as to be formed into a positive electrode. As a surface activity of the active material is reduced, decomposition of organic solvent on the positive electrode side is hardly caused during a charge/discharge cycle, so that a lithium secondary battery with extremely low capacity reduction can be obtained.

A suitable ratio (coating amount) of the metal fluoride to the positive electrode active material is slightly different depending on the kind of the metal fluoride. In the case of LiF, 0.1 to 2 relative to the positive electrode active material
The range of 0 mol% is preferred. If the LiF content is less than 0.1 mol%, the amount of coating on the surface of the particles of the positive electrode active material becomes insufficient, and the decomposition of the organic solvent in the non-aqueous electrolyte on the positive electrode side cannot be effectively suppressed. On the other hand, LiF is 20 mol%
If it exceeds, the internal resistance of the battery rises due to the low conductivity of LiF, and the diffusion of lithium in the positive electrode during discharge deteriorates, resulting in a decrease in charge / discharge efficiency.

From Table 1, the batteries BA1 to BA1 of the present invention using the positive electrode active material having a coating made of a metal fluoride on the surface of the particles are shown.
It can be seen that BA10 has a smaller capacity deterioration rate at the 150th cycle and is superior in charge / discharge cycle characteristics, as compared with comparative batteries BC1 to BC5 using the conventionally known positive electrode active material as it is. Among the batteries BA1 to BA10 of the present invention, the capacity deterioration rates of the batteries BA6 to BA10 of the present invention are particularly small. As shown in Table 2, the batteries BA11 to BA11 of the present invention.
The capacity deterioration rate of BA16 to BA30 of BA40 is 6%
The following is particularly small. From this, it is understood that the ratio of LiF to the positive electrode active material is preferably in the range of 0.1 to 20 mol%. Further, among the batteries BA16 to BA30 of the present invention, BA19, BA20, BA24, BA25, BA2
9, BA30, BA34, BA35 capacity deterioration rate is 4%
Since it is extremely small as below, Li as a film forming material
F is used, and LiNiO 2 and L are used as the positive electrode active material.
It can be seen most preferred to use a Li x Ni 1-y Co y O z typified iCoO 2.
