Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the cost for forming light shielding films and to improve throughput by subjecting a high-polymer phase dispersed with black fillers and a liquid crystal phase to phase sepn. CONSTITUTION:A pair of substrates 1, 10 consisting of glass plates, etc., are disposed to face each other and a display medium having the high polymer phase 15 and the liquid crystal layer 16 is disposed in the spacing therebetween. Picture element electrodes 9 are formed on the display medium side of the one substrate 1 and a counter electrode 12 is formed on the display medium side surface of the other substrate 10. The parts where both electrodes 9, 12 face each other are formed as picture element parts. The high polymer phase 15 is mainly formed in the regions exclusive of the picture elements including the regions formed with TFTs 13 and the black fillers are dispersed in this high polymer phase 15. The liquid crystal layer 16 is mainly formed in the picture element parts. The domains where the liquid crystal molecules are arranged radially concentrically or spirally toward the wall direction of the high polymer phase 15 are formed.

2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, there are liquid crystal display devices utilizing various display modes. For example, as a liquid crystal display element utilizing the electro-optical effect, a twisted nematic (TN) mode using nematic liquid crystal or Super twisted nematic (STN) mode liquid crystal display devices have been put to practical use. Also, a liquid crystal display device using a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mode has been proposed. These conventional display mode liquid crystal display devices require a polarizing plate and thus have low light utilization efficiency, and require alignment treatment, which complicates the manufacturing process.

By the way, in the above-mentioned conventional liquid crystal display device of the display mode, there is a problem that the viewing angle characteristic is poor. For example, in TN mode, the initial alignment of liquid crystal molecules is 90% between a pair of substrates when no voltage is applied.
The structure is such that the liquid crystal molecules are twisted and the long axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules rises at a certain angle (pretilt angle) toward one of the substrates. Moreover, when a voltage is applied, alignment treatment is performed so that liquid crystal molecules rise in the same direction. Therefore, when the liquid crystal molecules rise in the halftone, the liquid crystal molecules are tilted in the same direction, so that the apparent refractive index differs depending on the viewing direction of the liquid crystal molecules. Therefore, the contrast varies greatly depending on the viewing direction, and in an extreme case, a display abnormality such as an inversion phenomenon occurs.

Further, in the active matrix driving type liquid crystal display device among such liquid crystal display devices, a plurality of pixel electrodes for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal are formed on one substrate, and each pixel electrode is selectively driven. A non-linear element such as a thin film transistor is formed as a switching element for switching. Since such a non-linear element has a large characteristic dependency and deterioration in characteristics with respect to light irradiation, a resin light-shielding film is usually formed on the non-linear element to shield the non-linear element from light. For such a resin light-shielding film on the TFT-LCD, SID'92 DIGEST pp789-782 is used.
However, the formation method is not described. In general, since such a resin light-shielding film is formed by a spin coating method, there are problems that material cost and device cost are high and throughput is low.

In the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, a display medium containing a polymer phase and a liquid crystal phase is sandwiched in a gap between a pair of insulating substrates, at least one of which is transparent and has electrodes formed thereon. . In the picture element portion, as shown in FIG. 6, at least one domain in which liquid crystal molecules are arranged radially, concentrically, or spirally oriented in the wall direction of the polymer phase is formed. FIG. 6A shows a case where the liquid crystal molecules are arranged radially,
(B) shows a concentric circle shape, (c) shows a spiral shape. Such an arrangement of liquid crystal molecules can be obtained, for example, by forming spherulites in the alignment film.

Further, in the method of the present invention, a mixture of a liquid crystal compound and a material in which a black filler is mixed in a monomer or oligomer of a photocurable resin or a photosensitive resin is injected into a gap between a pair of substrates, When the mixture is irradiated with light energy, the liquid crystal phase and the polymer phase are phase-separated by photopolymerization. At this time, due to the action of the alignment film having the spherulites formed as described above, domains in which the liquid crystal molecules are aligned radially, concentrically, or spirally are formed. The above mixture may contain a polymerization initiator such as a photoinitiator.

When the mixture is irradiated with light energy through a mask, a polymer phase is formed in the irradiated part and the other part becomes the liquid crystal phase. Therefore, depending on the formation position of the mask, the polymer phase in which the black filler is dispersed can be formed on the thin film transistor element and used as the light shielding film.

Since at least one of the pair of substrates is transparent, a mask may be set on the back surface of this substrate. However, when the color filter formed on one transparent substrate is made of a material containing an ultraviolet absorber, This can be used as a mask when light energy is irradiated from the substrate side. Therefore, phase separation can be performed by self-alignment, and a liquid crystal display device with high alignment accuracy can be obtained. Further, when the electrode formed on one of the substrates is made of a material having a low ultraviolet ray transmittance, this can be used as a mask, and at the same time, fading of the color filter which is a problem during exposure can be prevented.

A black filler may be left in the liquid crystal portion on the pixel electrode, but this black filler is uniformly dispersed in the photosensitive resin, and the adhesion with the photosensitive resin is enhanced. However, it does not elute into the liquid crystal as an impurity, and since it has high resistance, there is no problem in displaying.

Although the liquid crystal molecules are arranged radially by forming spherulites in the alignment film in the above embodiment, the present invention is not limited to this, and similarly, spherulites are formed in the alignment film to arrange the liquid crystal molecules. May be concentric or spiral. Further, instead of forming spherulites on the alignment film, any method capable of arranging the liquid crystal molecules radially, concentrically or spirally can be adopted. For example, a method of forming irregularities in the alignment film in the same arrangement as that of the liquid crystal molecules described above, a method of forming a mountain-shaped projection at a position corresponding to the central portion of the picture element portion of the alignment film, or the like can be adopted. Further, it is needless to say that it is possible to adopt a method in which a similar film is formed as a base film of the alignment film, the shape is transmitted to the alignment film, and as a result, a desired shape is formed on the alignment film.

As is clear from the above description, in the present invention, the liquid crystal molecules are arranged radially, concentrically or spirally in the pixel portion, which has been a problem in the conventional liquid crystal display device. It is possible to improve the viewing angle characteristics without causing a display abnormality such as a change in contrast depending on the viewing angle direction or a reversal phenomenon. Since it is not necessary to provide a polarizing plate, the light utilization efficiency can be improved, and since it is not necessary to perform the alignment treatment of the alignment film, the manufacturing process can be simplified.

Since the polymer phase in which the black filler is dispersed and the liquid crystal phase are phase-separated, the cost for forming the light shielding film can be reduced and the throughput can be improved. Also,
By irradiating light energy through the mask, a liquid crystal domain can be formed on the pixel electrode and a light shielding film can be formed on the TFT.
