Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the usage degree and the life degree of a floppy disk singly by a method wherein external light which is input through a protective case is received through a slit formed in a recording part and its speed of rotation is displayed. SOLUTION: A disk-shaped recording part 1 which records data and which is turned and driven and a speed-of-rotation counting means 2 which counts its speed of rotation are built in a protective case 4. In addition, a speed-of- rotation display means 3 which displays a speed of rotation to be output from the speed-of-rotation counting means 2 is installed on the surface of the case. Then, the speed-of-rotation counting means 2 receives, through a slit formed in the recording part 1, external light which is input through the protective case 4, and a pulse signal corresponding to its speed of rotation is output. Then, the pulse signal is digitally displayed mechanically so as to correspond to the number of pulse signals to be output from the speed-of-rotation display means 3. In this manner, the speed of rotation of the recording part is visually displayed by a speed-of-rotation display which is installed on the surface of the protective case, and a user can detect the usage degree and the life degree of a floppy disk singly.

2. Description of the Related Art Generally, a floppy disk used as a recording medium is composed of a disk-shaped recording section for recording data and driven to rotate, and a protective case for accommodating the recording section.

Techniques for knowing the life of this floppy disk are disclosed in JP-A-58-224487 and JP-A-63-15.
It is disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 7368, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 1-241059, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 3-78820, and the like. In these conventional methods, a numerical value indicating the frequency of use of a floppy disk (FD) is recorded on the recording surface of the recording unit or the drive device.

With the techniques described in these publications, it is not possible to determine whether or not the life has expired unless the disk or the like is accessed. This means that the FDs commonly used by the drive device adopting the technique described in these publications and the drive device not adopting such technique, particularly the FD frequently used by the latter one. A disk-shaped recording section for recording and rotating data, rotation number counting means for counting the number of rotations of this recording section, and a signal indicating the rotation number output from this rotation number counting means. A floppy disk comprising: a rotation speed display means for accumulating and visually displaying and a protective case accommodating the recording unit and the rotation speed counting means.
