2. Description of the Related Art Smectite has been used in various industrial fields from the past, but bentonite raw ore is crushed, and dried granules are dispersed and suspended in water. As a method of concentrating the smectite slurry of the upper layer obtained by standing, there is a concentration method by centrifugation. However, since smectite slurries are generally highly viscous, the practical concentration limit of smectite slurries by centrifugation is only about 3%. Further, in the concentration of the smectite slurry by filtration, the smectite particles are so small that they pass through the furnace material, and practical concentration is difficult to perform.

As described above, since the smectite slurry has a high viscosity and the smectite particles are very small, the evaporation concentration method by heating is effective as the concentration method.
With this method, the evaporation efficiency is small and the cost is high.
It has not been implemented as a practical method. Further, according to this method, since all the substances existing in the slurry are concentrated, highly pure water is required for preparing the slurry.

Means for Solving the Problems and Modes for Carrying Out the Invention As a result of earnest studies to achieve the above-mentioned object, the present inventor has electrophoresed a smectite slurry such as montmorillonite or bentonite containing montmorillonite as a main component. By doing so, hydrogen ion-type modified smectite is concentrated and deposited on the anode, and a gelled substance that is concentrated to about 6 to 15% (wt%, the same applies hereinafter) is obtained for monovalent ion-type smectite such as Na + type. , Ca ++ type and other multivalent ion type smectites, it was found that a gelled substance concentrated to about 25 to 35% can be obtained. In the hydrogen ion-type modified smectite thus obtained, the pH of 1% pure water slurry is 2.5 to 4.5 and the conductivity is 12
The hydrogen ion type modified smectite showing 0 to 950 μS is capable of collectively treating and removing impurities such as colloidal substances, hardness components and organic substances contained in water, and the effect of removing impurities is, for example, 300 p
It has been found that it is effective when it contains only a low concentration of pm or less, and is therefore very effective in the secondary treatment after the primary treatment with the conventional water treatment agent.

Heretofore, as a method for obtaining hydrogen ion type clay from natural clay, there have been known methods such as dilute acid treatment, electrodialysis and treatment with H type ion exchange resin, but these methods are mainly solid. It is known as a method for obtaining an acid or activated clay. When this method is applied to bentonite or smectite, Al in the lattice is eluted and the structure is changed, and the eluted Al partially coexists with hydrogen ions. Therefore, it is said that the hydrogen ion type is not perfect ("Clay Encyclopedia", Asakura Shoten Co., Ltd., 1985).
By electrophoresis of the smectite slurry as described above, the pH of the 1% pure water slurry is 2.5 to 4.5,
Hydrogen ion-type smectite having an electric conductivity of 120 to 950 μS can be obtained, which does not cause elution of Al, does not substantially change the structure, and does not change the original properties of smectite. Impurities coexisting with smectite are removed during the electrolysis operation, so that smectite having a clean surface can be obtained.

The method for producing a hydrogen ion type modified smectite of the present invention is to apply a DC electric field to an aqueous slurry of smectite to cause the smectite to electrophorese to concentrate and deposit the smectite on the anode or in the anode chamber. In this case, as the raw material smectite, monovalent ion type or polyvalent ion type montmorillonite and clay (bentonite etc.) containing montmorillonite as a main component can be preferably used. This is made into a slurry with water, and montmorillonite is concentrated and collected in the anode or the anode chamber using an electrophoresis or electrolysis device. The slurry concentration is not particularly limited as long as it is a concentration at which montmorillonite particles migrate due to an applied voltage, but in the case of Na + type smectite, which generally has a high slurry viscosity, it is about 10% or less,
In the case of Ca ++ type smectite, which has a generally low slurry viscosity, about 30% or less is preferable for efficient concentration,
Usually, 1 to 5% slurry is preferable for Na + type, and 1 to 20% slurry is preferable for Ca ++ type. In this case, it is also possible to add a water-soluble organic compound or the like to the slurry and concentrate it on the anode as an organic complex with smectite.

The applied DC voltage is usually 1 to several tens V / cm, and the current is not limited, but is usually 1 mA to several tens A. The temperature is not particularly limited, but room temperature is usually sufficient. Although the time is not limited, it is preferably about 1 to 10 hours.

As the water used for preparing the slurry, ion-exchanged water, tap water, etc. are used. In the present invention, smectite particles are moved by electrokinetic development, so that nonionic or cationic impurities are contained in the water. Even if included
Since the amount of impurities in the obtained smectite concentrate is small, it is not always necessary to use high-purity water.

Before applying a DC voltage for electrophoresis,
It is possible to increase the electrical conductivity of the slurry by applying an AC voltage of several V to hundreds of tens V / cm to the smectite water slurry for several minutes to several hours or by performing an ultrasonic treatment of several W to several tens W. Therefore, the slurry concentration time by electrophoresis can be shortened. This pretreatment method has a conductivity of 50 μm when the smectite slurry to be concentrated is 1%.
Effective when lower than S, 50 μS or more, especially 1
It is recommended that electrophoresis is performed at 00 μS or more.

According to the method of the present invention, a high-purity hydrogen ion type modified smectite can be obtained at a high concentration from a low concentration bentonite or smectite slurry, which is suitable as an industrial method for producing smectite. In this case, when the bentonite or smectite slurry is converted to hydrogen ion type smectite by using an electrophoresis or electrolysis tank, smectite is concentrated in a gel state on the anode, so that the drying cost is reduced and the cost as a method for concentrating the smectite slurry is reduced. Is greatly reduced. Further, it is very effective as a pretreatment process when the smectite slurry is heated and dried to obtain powdery smectite, because the drying cost is reduced. Further, since such a smectite gel is concentrated in the initial smectite slurry, there is also a cost advantage in the smectite slurry or gel transportation. Therefore, the method of the present invention can be used as a concentration for slurry or gel transportation. It is useful. Moreover, in this case, the slurry or gel obtained in the present invention has a bactericidal effect and a high storage effect.

Since the obtained modified smectite has no structural change, it has almost the same properties as ordinary purified smectite except that it is acidic, and therefore it can be effectively used for the same applications as conventional smectites. To be Furthermore, substances adhering to or adsorbed on the surface of the smectite particles in the process of electrophoresis or electrolysis are removed, and since its adsorbability is increased, it is used for removing impurities from tap water, ground water, wastewater, etc., Not only hardness components in water but also dissolved organic compounds can be adsorbed and removed.

That is, in the case of the sample of Experiment No. 1, 1% thereof
Pure water slurry has pH = 5.39, conductivity = 93.8 μS
When added to tap water, the conductivity was slightly lower than that of tap water, but the evaporation residue increased. The pH of the 1% pure water slurries shown in Experiment Nos. 2 to 8 was 3.40.
In the case of the samples of ˜4.12 and conductivity = 226 to 123.4 μS, both conductivity and evaporation residue decreased when added to tap water. In the case of the raw material montmorillonite shown in Experiment No. 9 (Ref 1), both the conductivity and the evaporation residue increased. Therefore, from the above, the acid type (hydrogen ion type) modified smectites of Experiment Nos. 2 to 8 are in water. It was confirmed that the adsorption capacity of impurities was greatly improved.

Example 2 A smectite slurry containing montmorillonite as a main constituent was subjected to electrophoresis in the same manner as in Example 1 to give a gel-like acid type (hydrogen ion type) modified smectite (Experiment No. 10). To 14) were attached to the anode and evaluated in the same manner as in Example 1. In this case, to prepare a 1% pure water slurry and a tap water 0.1% slurry, a part of the gel was evaporated to dryness at 105 ° C., the solid concentration was determined, and the required amount was added to water. Therefore, a part of the water (about 10 g in the case of pure water and about 3 g in the case of tap water) is brought from the gel. The conductivity of tap water used is 34
6 μS (25 ° C.), the evaporation residue was 236 ppm.
The other experimental methods are the same as those for the dry powder (Table 1).
Table 2 shows the results.
