2. Description of the Related Art A liquid crystal panel displays an image as a whole panel by changing the light transmittance (hereinafter simply referred to as "transmittance") of each pixel of a liquid crystal layer in a liquid crystal cell. Here, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the liquid crystal cell (hereinafter, referred to as
If the “cell gap” is different at each position in the panel plane having a two-dimensional spread (ie, there is “cell gap unevenness”), the transmittance value in the same liquid crystal alignment state and the transmission with respect to the liquid crystal applied voltage are changed. The rate change characteristics are different at each position. Then, the display quality of each pixel varies depending on the cell gap unevenness, and the image quality of the entire liquid crystal panel deteriorates. For this reason, when commercializing this type of liquid crystal panel, for example, when the cell gap unevenness between the center part and the end part of the panel surface exceeds the allowable range necessary for maintaining image quality. In such a case, it is necessary to perform a cell gap unevenness test for determining that the liquid crystal panel is defective.

The detected luminances are displayed two-dimensionally on a display screen and visually compared. Here, in particular, it is said that there is a relatively nearly linear relationship between the luminance and the cell gap in each pixel of the liquid crystal panel. For this reason, in the conventional method for inspecting the cell gap unevenness of the liquid crystal panel, Applying the brightness unevenness inspection method, it is determined whether or not the difference in the cell gap of the liquid crystal panel exceeds a predetermined allowable range based on the difference in brightness between the center and the end of the liquid crystal panel (that is, the cell gap unevenness is large). To check if it is defective).

The cell gap value of a general or practical liquid crystal panel is often about 4 μm. Here, according to the study by the inventors of the present invention, according to the above-described conventional method of inspecting the cell gap of a liquid crystal panel based on the luminance, a gap smaller than about 3.5 μm or a gap larger than 4.5 μm has a higher luminance. And the cell gap are relatively linear, and it is possible to accurately determine whether or not the cell gap is within a predetermined allowable range based on the luminance.

However, in the range of about 4 ± 0.5 μm, the luminance does not change much even if the cell gap changes. Alternatively, there is a portion where the luminance is minimal with respect to the cell gap within the range of about 4 ± 0.5 μm (that is, a portion where the luminance is reduced and the rate of change of the luminance is also reduced). For this reason, there is a problem that it is fundamentally difficult to accurately inspect the cell gap unevenness based on the luminance difference particularly in a range of about 4 ± 0.5 μm which is practically necessary.

According to the liquid crystal panel cell gap unevenness inspection apparatus according to the first aspect, the light receiving element receives light of each of RGB from the liquid crystal panel mounted on the planar light source. Then, the light amount of R and the light amount of G at the first point located at the center of the surface of the liquid crystal panel and the four second points respectively located at the four corners are respectively detected by the detecting means from the received light signals for each of RGB. Is detected. Subsequently, the comparing unit compares the magnitude of the R light amount and the G light amount for one of the first point and the second point, and determines whether R or G corresponding to the smaller light amount is: This is set as the inspection color.
Here, according to the study by the inventors of the present application, the change characteristics of the R light amount (R transmittance) with respect to the cell gap are different from the change characteristics of the G light amount (G transmittance) with respect to the cell gap. In the range where the cell gap is about 4.2 μm and the cell gap is smaller than this, the rate of change of the amount of R light with respect to the cell gap is larger than the rate of change of the amount of G light with respect to the cell gap. That is, the light amount of R responds more sensitively to the increase and decrease of the cell gap. On the other hand, in a range where the cell gap is larger than about 4.2 μm, the rate of change of the light quantity of G with respect to the cell gap is larger than the rate of change of the light quantity of R with respect to the cell gap. It is more sensitive to the increase and decrease of the cell gap. Therefore, R or G set as the inspection color by the comparing means as described above is a color whose light amount responds more sensitively to the increase or decrease of the cell gap. Then, the difference in light amount between the first point and the second point of the test color (that is, R or G) set in this way is output as an index value of the cell gap unevenness by the output unit. You.

As shown in FIG. 3, the change characteristic of the transmittance (light amount) of R with respect to the cell gap d, the transmittance (light amount) of G
And the change characteristic of the transmittance (light quantity) of B are different from each other. In the range where the cell gap d is about 4.2 μm and the cell gap d is smaller than this, the rate of change of the R light quantity with respect to the cell gap d is smaller than the G light quantity with respect to the cell gap d. The rate of change is larger than the rate of change, and it can be seen that the light amount of R responds more sensitively to the increase and decrease of the cell gap. On the other hand, in a range where the cell gap d is larger than about 4.2 μm, the rate of change of the amount of G light with respect to the cell gap d is greater than the rate of change of the amount of R light with respect to the cell gap d. It can be seen that the light amount of (1) responds more sensitively to the increase / decrease of the cell gap d. Further, the light amount of B has a local minimum value when the cell gap d is about 3 μm and a local maximum value at about 4.6 μm. Therefore, it is theoretically possible to specify the cell gap from the transmittance of B. It turns out that neither is possible (even in practice).

In the first and second embodiments described above, the difference in the spectral characteristics of the color CCD camera 1, the difference in the color temperature of the backlight 110 mounted on the photographing table, and the like are shown in FIG. The characteristics shown vary. Therefore, the above-mentioned look-up table is prepared in advance for one characteristic as shown in FIG. 3, and at the time of actual inspection, the spectral characteristics of the color CCD camera 1 and the parameters such as the color temperature of the backlight 110 are determined. It is preferable to correct each cell gap value read from the lookup table according to the difference. For example, in the case of the first embodiment, such correction is performed in the inspection and measurement program that controls the CPU 2 by adding each cell gap value read from the look-up table and the parameters such as the above-described spectral characteristics. What is necessary is just to incorporate a correction program using a predetermined function that inputs the following. Alternatively, in the case of the second embodiment, the PROM (R) 35 or PRO
Such a correction program may be incorporated in the M (G) 36. Further, the shading of the lens of the color CCD camera 1 (peripheral luminance unevenness), the material of the liquid crystal, and the like may be corrected.

A color CCD is used as an example of the light receiving element.
Although the camera has been described, other solid-state imaging devices, television cameras, optical fibers, and the like can be used as light receiving devices. In particular, when a TV camera of the NTSC system or the PAL system is used as a light receiving element, the NT camera is used.
If the present invention is applied as a light receiving signal by extracting the R and G color difference signals included in the SC signal and the PAL signal, it is possible to measure the cell gap based on the color difference signal and output an index value indicating the cell gap unevenness. Is possible. Furthermore, even in a configuration in which not only transmitted light but also reflected light from a liquid crystal panel is received, it is possible to measure a cell gap or to output an index value indicating cell gap unevenness as in the case of using transmitted light. .
