Description

In the catalytic hydrogenation of 3-methyl-7-oxo-1-octanol, a solvent can be used as long as it does not inhibit the reaction. Examples of solvents that can be used include saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons such as hexane and octane; alcohols such as methanol and ethanol; esters such as ethyl acetate and methyl butyrate; and aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene and xylene. One type of solvent may be used, or two or more types may be mixed and used. When a solvent is used, the amount used is usually 0.01 to 50 times by weight, preferably 0.1 to 10 times by weight, relative to the 3-methyl-7-oxo-1-octanol.

Examples of solvents that can be used include saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons such as hexane and octane; ethers such as diethyl ether and tetrahydrofuran; and aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene and xylene. One type of solvent may be used, or two or more types may be mixed and used. The amount of solvent used is usually 0.1 to 100 times by weight, preferably 1 to 20 times by weight, relative to 3-methyl-7-oxo-1-octanol.

After the reaction is complete, 3-methyl-1,7-octanediol can be isolated from the resulting mixture by conventional methods such as distillation, extraction with an organic solvent, etc., after adding an acid such as hydrochloric acid or acetic acid; an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride, etc. to the reaction mixture to decompose the reaction product, which is a metal complex compound, and the remaining metal hydride complex compound. In this case, examples of the organic solvent used for extraction include esters such as ethyl acetate; halogenated hydrocarbons such as methylene chloride ; and saturated hydrocarbons such as hexane.

Examples of organic solvents used for extraction include esters such as ethyl acetate, halogenated hydrocarbons such as methylene chloride, and hydrocarbons such as hexane and toluene.

Reference Example: 30.0 g of 3-methyl-7-oxo-1-octanol (purity 90.2%, 171 mmol) and 0.6 g of Raney nickel (water content: 50 wt%) were placed in a 200 ml autoclave at room temperature under a nitrogen atmosphere. The atmosphere in the autoclave was then replaced with hydrogen, and the pressure in the autoclave was set to 7 atmospheres (absolute pressure). The temperature in the autoclave was raised to 100°C, and the mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 25 hours while appropriately supplying hydrogen to the autoclave to maintain the hydrogen pressure at 7 atmospheres (absolute pressure). The resulting reaction mixture was analyzed by gas chromatography using an internal standard method with diethylene glycol monomethyl ether as an internal standard, revealing that the conversion of 3-methyl-7-oxo-1-octanol was 99.3% and the selectivity to 3-methyl-1,7-octanediol was 98.3%. The reaction mixture obtained above was cooled to room temperature, the Raney nickel was removed by filtration, and the obtained filtrate was distilled under reduced pressure to obtain 25.8 g (161 mmol, yield: 94.2%) of 3-methyl-1,7-octanediol (colorless liquid, boiling point 136 to 140°C/2.5 mmHg). The physical properties of the obtained 3-methyl-1,7-octanediol are shown below.
