Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device structure capable of suppressing the reduction of visibility caused by dazzling or imprinting. SOLUTION: On the inner surface of a back side substrate 20, a transparent resin layer 22 is formed, on whose surface, a large number of slopes 22a are arranged while being inclined to the surface of the back side substrate 20. Since incident light and reflected light are refracted by the slopes 22a on the surface of the transparent resin layer 22 formed on a reflecting plane and the reflecting plane is equivalent with the case of reflection on a reflecting plane inclined to the surface of the back side substrate oppositely to the inclining direction of the slope parts 22a, the direction of regular reflected light made incident to a liquid crystal cell can be made out of the glance direction of a viewer and dazzling or background imprinting is reduced so that visibility can be improved.

2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, as a reflection type liquid crystal device, a polarizing plate is disposed on a front side and a rear side of a liquid crystal cell including a liquid crystal layer, respectively, as in a general TN type or STN type liquid crystal device, and a rear side is provided. In some cases, a reflection plate is disposed behind a polarizing plate. However, a reflection type liquid crystal device using such a polarizing plate captures external light into a liquid crystal cell, makes the display visible only with the reflected light, and emits external light and reflected light. At times, it is necessary to pass through two polarizers, so that a large light loss occurs, which causes a problem that the display is dark.

In order to reduce the drawback of the reflection type liquid crystal device that the display is dark, a reflection type liquid crystal device of a single polarizing plate type in which a polarizing plate is arranged only on the front surface of the front substrate has been proposed. In this type of liquid crystal device, the birefringence of the liquid crystal layer is changed depending on the state of application of an electric field to control whether the reflected light is transmitted or not transmitted through the front polarizing plate. For example, the polarization state of linearly polarized light that has passed through a polarizing plate disposed on the front surface is gradually changed by the birefringence of the liquid crystal layer, and becomes circularly polarized just when it reaches the reflection surface just after passing through the liquid crystal layer. Then, when the reflected light passes through the liquid crystal layer again, it becomes linearly polarized light having a polarization direction orthogonal to the initial one, and cannot pass through the polarizing plate. On the other hand, when an electric field is applied to the liquid crystal layer, the reflected light becomes When the linearly polarized light passes through the liquid crystal layer, it becomes linearly polarized light having a polarization direction orthogonal to the original on the reflection surface, and when the reflected light again passes through the liquid crystal layer again, the same polarization direction as the original polarization direction is obtained. It can be configured to be able to pass through a polarizing plate to become linearly polarized light.

In this type of reflection type liquid crystal device, in order to realize a white display in a light transmitting state, the surface of the reflection plate itself is made uneven, or the surface of the base resin layer provided with the surface unevenness is formed. By forming a thin metal film and forming a reflective surface that reflects the surface state of the underlying resin layer,
The whiteness is improved by utilizing the light scattering on the reflection surface.

Another type of liquid crystal device has been developed which enables display without using a polarizing plate. As this type of liquid crystal device, there is a liquid crystal device using a scattering mode in which display is performed by controlling a liquid crystal layer between a light scattering state and a light transmitting state by an electric field. In this liquid crystal device, a white display is realized by the light scattering state of the liquid crystal layer itself, and a black display is realized by preventing specularly reflected light from the reflecting surface from entering the eyes by the light transmission state of the liquid crystal layer. It has become.

However, in the above-mentioned liquid crystal device using a single polarizing plate system or a scattering mode,
Although the display can be brightened by reducing the number of polarizing plates or not using a polarizing plate at all, the eyes may be confused by direct specular reflection directly from the reflecting plate, which may worsen the visibility. There is a problem.

[0007] For example, in the single-plate polarizing plate system, the reflection surface is made of a rough scattering surface to enable white display, but when external light is reflected by the reflection surface, the light intensity distribution of the reflected light is obtained. Becomes stronger around the predetermined reflection direction corresponding to the incident angle, so that the visibility is extremely deteriorated when the angle relationship is such that light from a light source or the like enters the eyes of the person who is just viewing. .

Means taken by the present invention to solve the above-mentioned problem is that a light-transmitting state and a light-scattering state change between a front substrate and a rear substrate in accordance with an applied electric field. In a reflective liquid crystal device in which a controlled liquid crystal layer is disposed and a reflective surface is disposed on an inner surface of the rear substrate, a resin layer is formed on a surface of the reflective surface, and the resin layer Has a fine inclined surface inclined with respect to the rear-side substrate.

According to this means, the incident light and the reflected light are refracted by the inclined surface of the surface of the transparent resin layer formed on the reflecting surface, so that the reflecting surface is opposite to the inclined direction of the inclined surface. This is equivalent to the case where the light is reflected by the reflection surface inclined with respect to the plate surface of the side substrate, so that the direction of the specular reflection light of the external light incident on the liquid crystal cell can be deviated from the line of sight of the viewer, and Visibility of the background can be reduced, and visibility can be improved.

According to this means, since the reflecting surface is constituted by a large number of inclined reflecting surface portions, it is equivalent to a case where the reflecting surface is inclined in the direction of inclination of the inclined reflecting surface portion. In this case, a base resin layer is formed on the inner surface of the rear substrate, and the surface of the base resin layer has a large number of fine inclined surfaces inclined with respect to the rear substrate. The reflective layer is formed on the surface of the base resin layer. According to this means,
Since a large number of inclined reflecting surface portions can be formed only by forming a reflective layer on the surface of a base resin layer having a surface shape having a large number of inclined surface portions, select a material which is easy to surface-process as the base resin layer. Thereby, a large number of inclined reflecting surface portions can be easily formed.

The inclined surface portion in each of the above-described means forms a photosensitive resin layer in which the amount of dissolution or the amount of curing changes in accordance with the amount of exposure, and the amount of exposure to the photosensitive resin layer is measured in the direction of the plate surface of the rear substrate. It is preferably formed by modulation. According to this means, even a fine inclined surface portion can be formed accurately and easily.

As the liquid crystal layer 30 of the present embodiment, a TN type liquid crystal or an STN type liquid crystal can be used by appropriately setting a rubbing direction of an alignment film or a chiral agent so as to have a predetermined twist angle. . For example, there are several types of display systems using the ECB (Electronically Controlled Birefringence) effect. Liquid crystal molecules are vertically aligned in the absence of an electric field so that the polarization state does not change. The liquid crystal molecules may be tilted with respect to the light passing direction to obtain a desired retardation, and the polarization state may be changed to pass or block the reflected light to the front polarizer. In the case of type liquid crystals, the polarization state is converted to linearly polarized light in accordance with the retardation of the liquid crystal layer when no electric field is applied, and in the state where an electric field is applied, the liquid crystal molecules are vertically aligned to eliminate the influence on the polarization state. Can be. In this case, a retardation plate may be provided to compensate for the dispersion of the polarization state due to the wavelength of light.

In the present embodiment, a TN type liquid crystal is sealed in the liquid crystal layer 30, and the twist angle θ of the TN type liquid crystal and the orientation of liquid crystal molecules on the front side in the liquid crystal layer 30 with respect to the light transmission axis of the polarizing plate 40. Angle φ and retardation Δ of liquid crystal layer 30
By adjusting n · d, transmission and blocking of light can be controlled in accordance with the state of application of an electric field to the liquid crystal layer 30. Here, when the liquid crystal layer 30 is in a state where no electric field is applied, the external light passes through the polarizing plate 40 to become linearly polarized light, and then passes through the liquid crystal layer 30 to become circularly polarized light on the reflection surface, thereby causing reflection. When the light passes through the liquid crystal layer 30 again, the light becomes linearly polarized light having a polarization direction orthogonal to the initial state and cannot pass through the polarizing plate 40. When the liquid crystal layer 30 is in an electric field applied state, the polarizing plate 40 When the linearly polarized light that has passed through the liquid crystal layer 30 passes through the liquid crystal layer 30, it becomes linearly polarized light having a polarization direction orthogonal to the initial direction on the reflection surface, and when the reflected light passes through the liquid crystal layer 30 again, the same polarization direction as the original polarization direction is applied. The polarizing plate 4 becomes linear polarized light by

The liquid crystal layer 30 of the present embodiment may employ a display system using a scattering mode. In this case, the polarizing plate 40 disposed on the front surface of the front substrate 10 is unnecessary, and the liquid crystal layer
0 itself is in a light scattering state or a light transmitting state to perform display. A device called a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal may be used to realize the scattering mode of the present embodiment. In this case, liquid crystal molecules and polymers are present in the liquid crystal layer 30 in a state of being dispersed with each other.
This state includes a state in which polymer particles are dispersed in a liquid crystal, a state in which a large amount of polymer particles are arranged in a liquid crystal so as to be connected, and a state in a mesh-like skeleton of a gel polymer. There are various modes such as those containing liquid crystal.

In this case, a solution in which a liquid crystal and a polymer precursor that can be polymerized by light or an electron beam are compatible is injected into an empty cell, and then irradiated with light or an electron beam. It is preferable to form the liquid crystal layer 30 by polymerizing the polymer precursor and precipitating the polymer in the liquid crystal by phase separation. Various liquid crystals can be used as long as they have dielectric anisotropy and refractive index anisotropy. Here, when the liquid crystal has a positive dielectric anisotropy, the liquid crystal is horizontally aligned by rubbing the substrate surface, and when the liquid crystal has a negative dielectric anisotropy, the liquid crystal is vertically aligned. Is preferred. In particular, when a liquid crystal layer is formed by this method, both the liquid crystal and the polymer can be oriented in a predetermined direction.

Examples of the polymer precursor include photo- or electron-beam-polymerizable compounds such as biphenyl methacrylate and other methacrylates, acrylates and other vinyl compounds.
A thermopolymerizable compound such as an epoxy compound can be used. The thermopolymerizable compound can be heated to an appropriate temperature to cause phase separation of the polymer. In addition, a thermoplastic compound such as ethyl cellulose can be used as the polymer. In this case, the polymer is mixed with the liquid crystal in a heated state, and then injected into an empty cell and cooled to cause phase separation of the polymer. be able to. Note that by mixing a chiral component into the liquid crystal component, display contrast and viewing angle dependency can be improved.

As a specific example of forming the polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer 30 in this embodiment, for example, 90 wt% of “BL007” (trade name) manufactured by Merck Ltd. is used as the liquid crystal.
1 to 3 wt% of Merck's “CB15” (trade name) (provided that it is not limited to the range according to the twist angle) as a chiral component, and 7 wt% of biphenyl methacrylate as a polymer precursor A solution is prepared, and this solution is applied to the front substrate 10 and the rear substrate 2.
A gap between substrates made of O and a sealing material is injected into an empty cell having a gap of about 5 μm, sealed, and then irradiated with ultraviolet rays to cause phase separation of polymer particles in the liquid crystal. When the irradiation amount of the ultraviolet light is appropriately set, the driving voltage becomes about 5 volts,
Even a clock IC can be driven sufficiently. In such a method of forming a liquid crystal layer, the ratio of the liquid crystal component is 50 to 95 wt.
%, The driving voltage and the display mode can be set in a practical range.

In such a liquid crystal layer 30, when no electric field is applied, both the liquid crystal and the polymer particles in the liquid crystal layer are horizontally aligned, so that the light refraction indexes of the liquid crystal and the polymer particles become substantially equal. It becomes a light transmitting state. On the other hand, when an electric field exceeding a predetermined threshold is applied, the liquid crystal having dielectric anisotropy is vertically aligned in a region where the electric field is applied, and the liquid crystal also has refractive index anisotropy. A difference occurs between the refractive index of the polymer and the polymer, which results in a light scattering state.

In order to apply a predetermined electric field to zero, a large number of electrodes in a matrix may be formed on the inner surfaces of the front substrate 10 and the rear substrate 20, or some of the numerals, characters and figures may be formed. When it is sufficient to display only a limited number of display contents, some segment electrodes may be formed on one substrate inner surface, and a common electrode may be formed on the other substrate inner surface. Further, by setting the refractive indexes of the liquid crystal and the polymer, it is also possible to adopt a configuration in which a light scattering state occurs when no electric field is applied and a light transmitting state occurs when an electric field is applied.

In the above embodiment, as shown in FIG. 2, a transparent resin layer 22 is formed on the surface of the reflective electrode 21, and fine stripe-shaped inclined surfaces 22a are arranged on the surface of the transparent resin layer 22. Therefore, when external light is incident on the liquid crystal device, the presence of the inclined surface 22a causes the transparent resin layer 22 to be refracted at the time of incidence and at the time of reflection, thereby changing the reflection direction. In the case of the drawing, outside light is reflected as indicated by a dotted line without the transparent resin layer 22, whereas reflected light is reflected by the transparent resin layer 22 as indicated by a one-dot chain line, and reflected by a two-dot chain line. It acts as if there is a virtual reflection surface inclined with respect to the surface of the electrode 21.

As a result, in the case shown in FIG. 2, the external light is reflected toward the left side in the figure, so that it is difficult for a viewer to see the external light, and the dazzling due to the specular reflection of the external light and the reflection of the background are reduced. Visibility can be improved. In this case, for example, by disposing the display panel using the present liquid crystal device with the right side of the drawing as the upper side of the display surface, the illumination light or the like radiated from above is positioned below the eyes of the viewer. Reflection can enhance visibility.

The transparent resin layer 22 is made of OMNI
A photopolymer such as DEX (manufactured by DuPont, trademark) or DMP-128 (manufactured by Polaroid, product number) or another photosensitive resin is applied on the surface of the reflective electrode 21 and, as shown in FIG. By arranging the laser light sources 23 and 24 at an interval from each other, interference exposure is performed through an optical system such as a lens. In this case, in order to provide a stripe-shaped inclined surface portion, the laser light sources 23 and 24 may be scanned in the longitudinal direction of the stripe. As the transparent resin layer of the present embodiment, a photosensitive dissolvable positive resist such as a photosensitive dissolvable photopolymer whose dissolution amount changes according to the exposure amount, or a photosensitive curable photoresist whose curing amount changes according to the exposure amount A photosensitive curable negative resist such as a polymer is used.
By using these, the amount of dissolution at the time of development changes according to the periodic exposure amount by the interference exposure, so that the inclined surface 22a as described above can be formed. In this case, the inclination directions of the inclined surfaces are two laser light sources 23 and 24.
Are opposite to each other on both sides of the axis of symmetry. In order to form the inclined surface in a fixed direction periodically, only one side of the symmetry axis of the two laser light sources may be used for exposure. Further, in order to make the light intensity of the laser light sources 23 and 24 uniform in the plane direction, the light intensity is made uniform by constraining through a filter having a light and shade distribution, or the constrained light beam is widened widely. It is preferable to secure the uniformity of the light intensity by using a part of them. The direction of the slope, the angle of the slope, the cycle of the slope, etc.
It can be appropriately set by adjusting the dissolution or curing characteristics of the photosensitive resin with respect to the exposure amount. The period of the inclined surface is preferably about 1 to 30 μm, particularly preferably about 10 μm.

When the transparent resin is directly irradiated with light to form the surface unevenness according to the amount of exposure, the light refractive index of the transparent resin layer 22 depends on the degree of planar modulation of the amount of exposure. Also, a planar periodic structure occurs. Such a light refractive index modulation structure further enhances light modulation in addition to the above-mentioned surface irregularities.

The change in the light refractive index due to the exposure of the transparent resin layer 22 is such that the light refraction effect similar to that of the above-described embodiment can be achieved only by the change in the light refractive index even when no inclined surface is formed. Is possible. The inclination of the exposure amount forms a planar periodic refractive index structure in the transparent resin layer 22. The transparent resin layer having the same function as that described above can be formed by the inclination of the optical refractive index.

FIG. 4 is a partially enlarged sectional view showing a schematic structure of a reflection type liquid crystal device in another embodiment different from the above embodiment. In this embodiment, a color filter 1 in which respective colored layers 12a such as R (red), G (green), and B (blue) are appropriately arranged on the inner surface of the front substrate 10.
After a transparent protective film 13 is formed thereon, a transparent electrode 14 is further formed thereon. on the other hand,
A reflective layer 25 made of a metal such as Al or Cr is formed almost entirely on the inner surface of the rear substrate 20, and a transparent resin layer 26 is formed on the surface of the reflective layer 25. On the surface of the transparent resin layer 26, an inclined surface 26a having substantially the same width as that of the colored layer 12a is formed in a stripe shape such that a step between adjacent inclined surfaces is about 2 μm with a plane cycle of about 10 μm width. Is formed. A transparent electrode layer 27 made of ITO or the like is formed on the surface of the inclined surface 26a.
The transparent electrode layer 27 is preferably formed such that the thickness is smaller than the step between the inclined surfaces. In this case, the transparent electrode layers 27 are formed so as to be separated from each other by the steps, so that electrical insulation between pixels can be ensured without patterning the transparent electrode layers 27. Further, in order to more reliably obtain the insulating property between the adjacent transparent electrode layers 27, as shown by an arrow Q in the drawing, the insulating layer is formed by sputtering or the like from obliquely above the inclined direction of the inclined surface 26a. As described above, according to the present invention, the incident light and the reflected light are refracted by the inclined surface of the surface of the transparent resin layer formed on the reflecting surface, so that the reflecting surface is inclined by the inclined surface. Since it is equivalent to the case where the light is reflected by the reflection surface inclined to the plate surface of the rear substrate in the opposite direction to
