Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a title compound by the reaction of a dialkyl carbonate with an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, using an alkali metal hydroxide as a reaction accelerator which is recovered easily from the reaction product and recycled to the reaction system.
CONSTITUTION: An alkyl alcohol of formula III (R is 1-8C alkyl) is prepared by reacting a dialkyl carbonate of formula I and a hydroxide of formula II (M is alkaline earth metal) [e.g. Ca(OH)2, Mg(OH)2, etc.] in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. NaOH, KOH, etc.). The reaction temperature is pref. room temperature to 100°C, and the reaction is carried out under atmospheric pressure.
