Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove various malodorous components by simple operation and at high deodorization ratio without forming waste water, by bringing the malodorous gas into contact with compost, on which dil. aq. soln. of inorg. acid is spread, so as to decompose the malodorous components.
CONSTITUTION: Dil. aq. soln. of inorg. acid, e.g., nitric acid, sulfuric acid, about 0.01 mol/l in concn., is spread on a small amount of compost so as to maintain the compost at water content of 40W70% and at pH of 7W8, hereby malodorous gas is adsorbed or absorbed excellently, and decomposition by microorganisms is accelerated. NH3 or amines contained in the malodorous gas is decomposed to nitric acid (salt), mercaptans or sulfides to sulfuric acid (salt), hence it is not always necessary to add a large amount of acid to the compost. The acid is spread continuously or intermittently during deodorization to control and keep the conditions of the compost. The malodorous components are removed either by adsorption with the compost, or by dissolution into the water contained in the compost, or by decomposition with microorganisms.
