Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a modified phenolic resin useful as electrical insulating materials, decorative laminates, etc., and having excellent high-frequency characteristics, chemical resistance and punchability, by modifying the resin with isopropenylphenol (oligomer) and polybutadiene.
CONSTITUTION: (1) IsopropenylphenolIWIII and/or its oligomer are reacted with polybutadiene preferably at 100W130°C in the presence of an acidic catalyst (e.g. sulfuric acid, etc.). (2) The product is reacted with a phenolic compound (e.g. cresol, etc.) in the presence of an acidic catalyst to give a reaction product. (3) The reaction product as part of the phenolic component reacted with formaldehyde preferably at 90W110°C in the presence of an acidic or alkaline catalyst to give a modified phenolic resin.
