Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare an oxidation polymerizable vinyl modified alkyd resin capable of giving a low viscosity even at a high solid content and forming films having improved properties, with good drying properties, by copolymerizing a specific oil- modified alkyd resin with an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
CONSTITUTION: (A) 30W80wt% of an oil-modified alkyd resin having an oil longth of 65W85% and a viscosity of 5W100 poises (with a 100% solid content or a ≥95wt% diluted solution in xylol at 25°C) and an acid value ≤30 is heated to 130W200°C in the presence of a solvent while passing an inert gas. (B) 70W20wt% of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a polymerization catalyst is dropped to the resin uniformly for 1W9hr, and copolymerized to give a vinyl modified alkyd resin having a viscosity of 10W100 poises (a 74W76wt% diluted solution in xylol at 25°C) and an acid value ≤20. The oil-modified alkyd resin is obtained by reacting an oil component having copolymerizability, oxidative polymerizability and an iodine value ≥100 with a fatty acid, a polyhydric alcohol, and a polybasic acid.
