Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a hydrogel having large particle size and excellent water absorbing power, by carrying out a reverse phase suspension polymerization of an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer (or metal salt thereof) in the presence of a lyophilic and carboxyl group-containing polymer as a dispersant.
CONSTITUTION: A carboxyl group-containing polymer having a carboxyl group content of at least 0.01mol% and MW of at least 500 (e.g. a copolymer of methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid-ethylhexyl acrylate in a ratio of (0W16): (2W10):(98W74) is used as a dispersant. To an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer (e.g. acrylic acid) and/or its metal salt are added approximately 0.01W 1wt% water-soluble catalyst and approximately 0.01W20wt% foresaid dispersant, and the resulting mixture is polymerized in a medium of water and an organic solvent in a weight ratio of about (0W50):(100W50) at approximately 40W100°C under a reverse phase suspension condition with stirring.
