Abstract

PURPOSE: To make ignition energy unnecessary and minimize the amt. of N2 used or reduce it to zero by introducing an O2-contg. gas current into a gas mixing portion the inlet and outlet of which for a hydrocarbon-contg. gas current is sealed with water or an aq. soln., and then sufficiently mixing both the currents.
CONSTITUTION: A gas current contg. hydrocarbon such as ethylene is supplied 1 to gas mixer 2 using an ethylene oxide (EO) absorption tower. In mixer 2 the current is successively passed through 30 steps of ballast trays 3 over which a 10wt% aq. soln. of glycol is flowing as an EO absorbing soln. After removing mist accompanied by the current by uppermost demister 4, the current is supplied 5 to an EO reactor. At this time, the absorbing soln. is supplied 6 to uppermost tray 3, contacted with the hydrocarbon-contg. gas, passed through downcomer 7 while absorbing EO, and supplied 8 to an EO stripper through lower trays 3 in succession. On th other hand, an O2-contg. gas is introduced 21 into gas mixing portion 11 of mixer 2 together with a slight amt. of N2, spouted into the absorbing soln. from orifices 23 of a bundle of pipes 22, and mixed with the hydrocarbon-contg. gas current.
