Abstract
PURPOSE: A low-voltage-working, remarkably viewable liquid crysral indicator includes a new sealing material comprising a liquid crystal mixture containing double-schiff basic compound, and a dye aa a controller.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal indicator comprises a container, a liquid crsytal and polycolor dye mixture 7. The container consists of two base plates 3, 4 having In2 O3 electrodes 1, 2 and edge-sealed members 5, 6. A mixture 7 comprises a liquid crystal mixture of MBBA and EBBA in a weight ratio of 6:4, mixed with 30wt% of double-schiff compound of general formula as ilustrated, such as bis- (4-N-ethylbenzylidene)-2-cyano-1,4-phenylenediamine and 0.5wt%, based on the weight of mixture 7, of a dye. The useful dye is, for example, 4-(N-pyrolidinohenyl) azo-5'-nitrothizole. The liquid crystal indicatior works at a lower voltage, less than one-third of the prior device, and exhibits high viewability due to a remarkable contrast.
