Abstract
PURPOSE: To efficiently and surely remove separated matters from a fuel rod, improve the heat transfer characteristics of the fuel rod and heighten its strength, by vibrating the separated matters in a washing liquid mixed with solid particles.
CONSTITUTION: The fuel rod 15, which has been used in a boiling water reactor for a predetermined time, is taken out of the reactor and introduced into a washing vessel 10 containing the washing liquid 11 made by mixing low-temperature pure water with ice grains of 1 to 2 mm in diameter. Supersonic waves of 300 to 500 KHz in resonance frequency are generated by vibrators 13 installed in the vessel 10 at its bottom to wash the fuel rod 15. Then, the rod 15 is taken out of the vessel 10 and introduced into a hot pure water vessel 23 through an assembly transfer process 21. Thereafter, the fued rod 15 is supplied to a finish washing process 24. The operation according to this method is easier than the conventional brushing method, by which only adhering matters of about 10 μ in diameter can be removed. Adhering matters of 0.1 u or less in diameter can be removed by the present method.
