Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a light-colored, high polymeric epoxy resin having high heat resistance, by reacting a low molecular epoxy resin having 2 or more epoxy groups, with a dihydric phenol, in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A high polymeric epoxy resin useful for laminating, molding, powder coating, etc., is prepared by reacting (A) a low molecular epoxy resin having two or more 1,2-epoxy groups, pref. the resin of the formula (n is an integer of 0-4; A is a residue of dihydric phenol such as bisphenol A) obtained by the reaction of bisphenol A with epichlorohydrin, with (B) a dihydric phenol, in the presence of (C) 0.0001-0.05 mole, based on 1 mole of the dihydric phenol, of a catalyst comprising a quaternary ammonium salt such as methyl tricaprilyl ammonium chloride, in the absence of solvent, at 100-200°C.
