Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain honeycomb-shaped activated carbon with remarkably reduced press. loss, high mechanical strength and enough performance as activated carbon itself by impregnating a honycomb structure made of ceramics with a soln. of a carbon type component, followed by converting into activated carbon.
CONSTITUTION: Ceramic material such as alumina or silica is formed into a honeycomb shape and calcined. The resulting honeycomb structure is impregnated with a soln. of a carbon type component optionally blended with a transition metal or its salt in water or org. solvent. The impregnated structure is then calcination carbonized at 200W400°C in an inert gas atmosphere and continuously calcination activated at 750W900°C in an inert gas atmosphere such as steam to obtain the desired honeycomb-shaped activated carbon. The carbon type component may be, e.g. glucose, and the transition metal or its salt includes Ni, Co and Mn or their nitrates, sulfates and hydrochlorides.
