Abstract

PURPOSE: A vitreous carbon-carbon composite having a great bending strength and a small gas permeability, comprising amorphous matrix carbon and amorphous fibrous reinforcing carbon, forming the interface without the interposition of third substance.
CONSTITUTION: A spinned uncured novolack fiber is cured by heating in an aqueous solution containing an acid catalyst and an aldehyde to manufacture cured novolack fiber of a fiber length of preferably more than 1.0 mm and a fiber diameter of preferably 10 to 40 micron. Then, the novolack fiber is mixed with 30 to 90 wt %, preferably 50 to 80 wt % a phenol resin, molded into a desired shape, and then cured by heating under pressure. Then, the cured resin compound is subjected to carbonization treatment at more that 1000°C, preferably more than 1200°C to manufacture a desired carbon-carbon compostie. The composite contains 30 to 90 wt %, preferably 50 to 80 wt % fibrous reinforcing carbon, and the rest is amprphous matrix carbon.
