Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a porous carbon composed of glassy carbon and containing interconnected pores, by calcining a porous synthetic resin material made of phenol- polyvinyl acetal resin in a nonoxidizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: A phenolic resin (pref. a water-soluble resol resin), polyvinyl alcohol (degree of polymerization: about 1,000W5,000, degree of saponification: ≥ about 70%), a pore-forming material (e.g. wheat starch), a crosslinking agent (e.g. formaldehyde) and a catalyst (e.g. sulfuric acid) are dissolved or dispersed in water, and the mixture is cured in a mold by heating. The molded article is washed with water to wash out the pore-forming material, the unreacted crosslinking agent, the catalyst, etc. The resulted porous material of phenol/polyvinyl acetal resin (pref. of 10W85wt% phenol content) is carbonized by calcining at ≥ about 800°C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere.
