Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The reaction of glutaraldehyde with 5,5-dimethylhydantoin or acetamide results in the formation of said water-soluble compound. The aqueous solution is pale yellow to pale brown; the solid (amorphous polymer), after the evaporation of water, is pale yellow to pale brown and soluble in methanol. The reaction product from 5,5-dimethylhydantoin has characteristic spectrum lines at 208.56, and 181.14 ppm in 13C NMR and the one from acetamide has at 175.03 and 96.03 ppm.
USE: Agents for non-shrink treatment for fiber products and crosslinking agents to improve the water resistance of resins.
PREPARATION: 1 mole of 5,5-dimethylhydantoin or acetamide and 1W3 moles of glutaraldehyde are stirred in water at 40W80°C to from the objective transparent solution.
