Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain denatured zeolite having greatly improved selective adsorbability for aromatic C8 hydrocarbons by treating faujasite type zeolite with an inorganic acid and/or an organic acid.
CONSTITUTION: A faujasite type zeolite, particularly Y-type zeolite of a SiO2/ Al2O3 molar ratio of 3 to 5, is brought into contact with an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid and/or an organic acid under the condition of pH 0.5 to 4.0 and 10 to 90°C. As the inorganic acid, hydrochloric acid may be cited, and also as the organic acid, acetic acid may be cited. The acid treatment increases the SiO2/ Al2O3 molar ratio of Y-type zeolite to 4.5 to 7.5. Then, the zeolite treated with the acid is substituted with combined ions, e.g., K-Ba, etc., to confer upon it a selective adsorbability for p-xylene suitable for the separation of isomers, and then the zeolite thus treated is treated by heating at more than 100°C, particularly at 300 to 600°C for activation. The zeolite is then used for the separation of isomers.
