Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent stress corrosion cracking by forming an inert gas layer in a reactor vessel at the stoppage and reducing the concentration of dissolved oxygen as well as dissolved hydroperoxide before the raising of the output.
CONSTITUTION: After the fuel change is ended with the stoppage of the operation, the top of a reactor vessel 2 is sealed up. A nitrogen gas is fed into the reactor vessel 2 from a feeder 11 to form a nitrogen gas layer. The nitrogen gas layer thus formed checks the dissolving of oxygen in the air and the resulting partial pressure permits reduction in the concentration of dissolved oxygen. The concentration of dissoved hydroperoxide intensifies in the rate of reduction when the temperature of cooling water exceeds 150°C in the reactor vessel. Then, as the control rod is withdrawn gradually from the core, nuclear heating is started.
