Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an ester useful for a raw material of fibers, adhesives, etc. in high yield without by-products, by reacting a nitrile with water and an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst containing titanium, silicon and optionally a specific metal element as effective components.
CONSTITUTION: An ester is prepared by reacting a nitrile (1 mole) with water (preferably 1W20 moles) and an alcohol (preferably 1W10 moles) at ≥100°C, preferably at 150W400°C in the presence of a catalyst containing as effective components, titanium, silicon and optionally one or more metal elements selected from silver, gold, magnesium, zinc, tin, lead, zirconium, vanadium, antimonyl, bismuth, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, cobalt and nickel. Preferably the atomic ratio of silicon is 0.01W200 and that of thw whole metal element is 0W10 on the basis of titanium.
