Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce cost through preventing decarburization of ferrite to occur on the surface layer of steel material by specifically controlling cooling after hot-roll of spring-steel material contng. 1-3% of Si. CONSTITUTION:Spring-use steel material contng. 1-3% of Si is hot rolled and then cooled in the temperature range of 750-600 deg.C at a cooling rate between 15 deg.C/min and 200 deg.C/min. This condition enables to prevent ferrite from being decarburized without producing structure due to high-speed cooling. This cooling rate is easy to achieve by passing air through coiled steel wound in usual way after rolling operation. The process allows cooling rate faster than the conventional natural cooling, and therefore is effective in reducing production cost and can eliminate cutting or grinding work that is conventionally needed before spring formation.
